[Style Inspiration Board] – September 2012

Here’s a look at what I’m inspired by this month…

metallic denim - Denim is no longer just a basic blue and you can find all kinds of variations including vibrant colors and funky prints.  Moving into the new season, I really like seeing denim with a metallic finish, especially gold which always looks great with classic black.

* dark lips - I have always loved the look of dark lips against fair skin.  Fall is the perfect time to start rocking this trend.

* shades of plum - Vintage grape and wine shades are totally making a comeback both on the fashion front and in makeup.

* envelope clutch - Oversized envelope styled bags are a small and chic way to hold all your essentials.  When they feature a strap, it’s an added bonus.

* ankle wrap heels - I especially like the look with the peep toe, it shows a lot of skin while the ankle strap holds you in for a little bit of extra comfort.

* 40′s inspired fashion - Many fall runways were inspired by the vintage elegance of the 1940′s which included classic styles mixed with a little drama.

[Outfit Post] with Gold Polka Dot Black Top, High Waist Black Mini Skirt, and Gold Accessories…An Elegant Going Out Look

Posted in FASHION, JEWELRY, MELI'S FAB FINDS, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, VINTAGE with tags , , , , on July 8, 2012 by stylebymeli

I wore this outfit over the weekend.  I was just going out to dinner.  It’s very classic, simple, and versatile.  And stylish?  It goes without saying ;)

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a black stretch top with gold polka dots.  It doesn’t have a label and being it’s from a consignment store, I have no idea where it truly came from.  I’m not much of a polka dot person, but you can’t go wrong with this top.

The black stretch mini skirt is from Bebe.  It’s such a wardrobe staple.  I love the stretch as it accentuates all the natural curves of my body.  (If you haven’t noticed, I like my clothing tight on the body).

The shoes are Charles David.  They are gold with bow styling detail at front and a cork heel.

I’m wearing a ton of jewelry:  3 stacked bracelets, long necklace, and a ring.  Most of it is from Forever 21, although one of the bracelets is a snake bracelet from BCBG and one of the other bracelets is from my mother.  I love adding a vintage piece when I can!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I specifically wore this out just at night for dinner, although I would have no problem wearing this during the day. I like to be fancy–day or night!  This is simple fancy which allows for it to also be a great outfit for the daytime.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  When wearing mainly an all black outfit, it’s essential to play up the accessories.   Black and gold is one of my favorite styling combos, so I made sure to really add a good amount of gold jewelry to enhance the final look.  I love my bling!

-  The polka dot top is actually really sheer, so I had to layer a thin black cami underneath.  Whenever you feel something may be too revealing, follow your stylish instincts and do something about it!  In this case, layering was necessary.

- I was extremely tempted to finish off the look with a black and gold belt at the waist.  However, sometimes less is more, so I compensated the belt and exchanged it for the long gold beaded necklace.  I definitely made the right style call, although next time, maybe I would wear this again with a belt at the waist to switch it up.

To belt or not to belt? Another reason I skipped the belt at the waist is because the skirt already hits the waistline and cinches it, creating a horizontal line at the smallest part.

[Outfit Post] with Bright Orange Cami, Black Cropped Vest, and Vintage Baby Pink Denim Shorts…A Casual Summer Look

Posted in CONSIGNMENT STORES, DENIM, FASHION, MELI'S FAB FINDS, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, SHORTS, VINTAGE with tags , , , , , , on June 20, 2012 by stylebymeli

Happy summer!  I wanted to share a summer look I created last week.  Although the look itself is very simple with easy layering pieces, the color combination is striking!

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing an orange cami from Express.  I have a ton of the Express camis that I typically wear to the gym, but I love the color of this one so much that this is a part of my regular wardrobe, NOT my fitness attire!  (Although, I’d have no problem hitting the gym in bright orange)!

The vest is by Yoana Baraschi.  I have definitely featured this piece in previous outfit posts being that it is so versatile and easy to style.  I love the cut of the vest along with the unique edging.

The baby pink denim shorts are Liz Claiborne.  (Don’t laugh)!!  These are actually high waisted, but I chose to layer the cami over the waistline in this look.  My other option when styling these would be to tuck the shirt into the shorts so you can see the horizontal line created at the waist.  I picked these up at a local consignment store and fell in love with them the moment I tried them on in the fitting room.  I think it’s very safe to assume that the shorts are vintage, 80′s?  Perhaps, 90′s?  I have no idea, but regardless, they are totally rockable in 2012!  (Hmm, I think I just made up a word).

The peep toe heels are Gucci.  I wear these a lot as you can see!  I always get a ton of compliments on them too no matter how I style these!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  This is a casual look for me.  The heels dress it up a bit but ultimately, I would still classify this as a daytime look.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I’m absolutely in love with this color combination.   Initially, I had styled the bright orange with the light pink shorts and thought that in itself was striking as they looked like summery creamsickle colors when paired together, but I wanted to step it up even more so I decided to then incorporate a splash of black by adding the vest and the heels.  Why?!  High contrast = visual captivation!

-  Being that the shorts are high waisted, visually, they make the waist look even smaller by cinching the waist even more.  These shorts happen to fit perfectly, slightly snug but not suffocating.  I wouldn’t buy them if they were too snug for comfort!

- It’s interesting to find that orange is the “it” color this season as it turns out that all my orange pieces I purchased a year ago.  I loved it then as much as I do now.  It’s just great to be ahead of the styling curve!

I happen to love the makeup I wore that day. Bright peachy cheeks with a semi-bright pink lip. That’s my signature makeup style the majority of the time and it especially works well in the summer and with this outfit.

An Iconic Look at the Guess “30 Years of Sexy” Ad Campaign – Then and Now

Posted in CELEBRITY FASHION, FASHION, SHOPPING, VINTAGE with tags , , , , on May 9, 2012 by stylebymeli

I love this image of Claudia Schiffer back from her 1989 Guess ad campaign

Still looking fabulous and youthful, 23 years after her first ad campaign!

The brand Guess is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and they chose former Guess girl Claudia Schiffer to model their anniversary collection.  She looks as stunning now as she did then!

Personally, I have not only always had a high appreciation for the Guess brand, but also for their ad campaign.  I can remember collecting Guess ads from magazines as early as the late 90′s and proudly displaying them on my closet door.

At a young age, I always felt like I could relate to the “Guess girl” and that I essentially was this girl, stylishly speaking.  If I were to define her, I would describe her as fashionably captivating and fiercely confident in who she is as a woman, which is always portrayed in her strong image.  She naturally radiates sex appeal, but always manages to maintain a high level of sophistication and class.  She’s a bombshell by day and a sex kitten by night.  Her style is edgy and also delicately feminine.

The collection features the brand’s greatest style hits within the past 30 years including leopard prints, cigarette jeans, black/white gingham, bold daisy prints, bustiers, and much more!  My favorite pieces from the collection include the Beverly Sophie Gingham Pant and the ever so classic Claudia Jean, which is a replication of the original from the early 90′s.

[Outfit Post] with a Pair of Red Pants Styled with Black…A Flashy and Festive Look

Posted in FASHION, MELI'S FAB FINDS, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, SHOPPING, VINTAGE on November 21, 2011 by stylebymeli

Due to my hectic schedule and my current physical condition (unfortunately, I am still not feeling well so it’s been hard for me to make the time to blog), but I wanted to share a current outfit showcasing the new love of my life:  bright red pants.

And yes, they have stirrups on the bottom if you haven’t already noticed.  (I will be talking about this in more detail, don’t you worry)! ;)

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a black tube top from Bebe Sport.  This is a basic layering piece.  I honestly don’t even wear it all that often but it’s classic and I love the fit.

Over the tube top, I am wearing a cropped black shrug from Forever 21.  I can’t get over how much I wear this shrug.  I love shrugs and I love cropped tops, so it should come as no surprise as to how this piece is a wardrobe staple of mine.

The red pants (they definitely are vintage) I purchased about a month ago when I went to the new Beacon’s Closet in Manhattan.  This has been the best fashion purchase I have made for the entire year (hands down)!  Since the beginning of the fall season, I have really been hunting for a hot pair of skinny red pants.  I nearly died when I found them and then when I tried them on to find they fit my body PERFECTLY I was beyond ecstatic!!!  (For me, vintage is so hit or miss in terms of the sizing).

[FYI I almost splurged on a pair of red skinny jeans from Guess when I was checking them out at Bloomingdales back in September.  However, they didn't have my size so I couldn't even see how they would look and in the back of my mind, I couldn't justify paying full price on a pair of red jeans because of the practicality of them.  (It's not like I could wear red jeans to the supermarket...although I would truly wear red pants anywhere).  A few weeks later, I found these red pants, so I guess it was a sign when they did not have it in my size in the Guess red jeans I initially was looking at!]

The shoes are BCBG.  They are a black suede with a pointed toe.  I love these shoes and have had them for a few years now.

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I guess you could say this was a day to night type of look.  I have been wearing red pants a lot when I go out.  They’re also great this time of year to wear for the holidays.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I kept my makeup pretty soft since the pants are definitely the focal point of the look.  Personally, I think adding red to the lips or any other traces of red would just make it too matchy-match and essentially ruin the overall styling.  It would then start to look tasteless in my opinion.

 - I prefer to match bright colors with neutrals.  In this case, the red is paired with black.  You can’t go wrong pairing anything with black.  They also contrast beautifully and are in total style harmony.

[Styling Confession]: I’ve already worn these pants a handful of times and although red pants are a current trend, I think they are so classic, that I will be wearing red pants for many years to come!  They are so sharp and stylish.

Red pants don't only add a sense of flashiness but also complete any look with confidence. Be prepared to make a grand entrance with a pair of red pants!

I mainly wanted to focus on the fact that these pants are not just pants, they have STIRRUPS on the bottom!  I talk about my obsession with stirrups all the time, so the fact that these pants have stirrups just makes it styling perfection!

I’m sure many people are wondering why I love stirrups (“isn’t that trend so outdated Meli?”)…the last time I remember really rocking stirrups was back in the 90′s during my childhood.  Everyone had stirrups.  I actually didn’t really appreciate them at the time or think they were that cool (mainly because I didn’t understand them!), but that’s all people wore at that time!  (Does anyone remember that?)

[Fashion for Thought]:  It’s funny to think that today the cool kids rock jeggings, but back in my day we were rocking funky printed stirrup leggings.  Oh how fashion times have changed?!

Anyhow…moving far, far away from the 90′s, I fully appreciate stirrups because they visually elongate the legs (versus a regular pant hem that cuts right at the ankle).  I’m pretty short to begin with (5’1″ to be exact), so anything to add visual length is going to be a huge styling plus in my opinion.  I also just LOVE the way they look tucked away in a pair of heels as shown in the photo on the left.
