Project Runway Season 10 – Episode 1 Runway Review – The Companion Piece Challenge

Posted in FASHION, PROJECT RUNWAY, Uncategorized with tags , , on July 19, 2012 by stylebymeli

Another season of Project Runway kicked off in Times Square and we’re now in the tenth season.  I’ve been loyally following the show since season two and been hooked ever since!  It’s refreshing to see a new set of designers and based on what I’ve seen thus far within the first episode, I’m mildly impressed with the talent that has been presented and hoping to see progression as the season unfolds.

The Challenge:  Create a companion piece for your original look.  (Designers were able to create a first look to show who they are as a designer and given a full day with $100 budget to create a second look that compliments their first look).

Guest Judges:  Lauren Graham (actress) and Patricia Field  (costume designer and stylist)

My Runway Review:  (My brief notes taken while watching each designer’s look come down the runway in the order they walked in)

1-  Ven:  Absolutely LOVE the hot pink rose top, the construction and attention to detail is on point, sort of didn’t like the overall styling of that look but the hot pink dress compliments very nicely.  Great set!

2-  Beatrice:  NO STYLE, boring designs, ugly colors, where’s the fashion behind either of these looks???  This girl is not going to last!

3-  Lantie:  Love the lace in the first look, the second look is a disaster…bad fabric choice, bad silhouette, does nothing to enhance the model

4-  Andrea:  Bad silhouettes, boring designs, not very tasteful

5-  Christopher:  Black dress a little boring, could have used a fun color but the second look…AMAZING!  Unique, current, and well executed!  Not crazy about the red lip with this dress, the styling could have been tweaked but the dress is fabulous!

6-  Alicia:  Not my aesthetic but definitely innovative

7-  Elena:  So avant garde and mysterious, definitely caught my eye!

8-  Buffi:  Kinda trashy, lacks taste

9-  Dmitry:  OMG!  [a GOOD omg] Beautiful looks, love the modern elegance within his work!

10-  Kooan:  A little too futuristic and cartoonish for my taste but I’ll give him credit for being unique and limitless

11-  Gunnar:  Very cohesive and HOT!  Love both looks, especially the first one

12-  Nathan:  Mediocre designs, great choice of solid colors

13-  Sonjia:  Interesting pieces, great second look…edgy, chic, and fashion forward

14-  Melissa:  Not a fan of two back to back black looks, they were sharp but nothing too out of the box

15-  Raul:  Not the most tasteful/fashionable looks, execution is questionable

16-  Fabio:  Interesting to a small degree but not memorable

Christopher is the challenge winner of episode one of Project Runway season 10. This definitely was one of the more memorable looks of the evening.

My Final Thoughts:

-  Based on immediate first impressions, I’m a huge fan of Ven’s work.  He has great technical skills, a nice design aesthetic, attention to detail, and point of view in fashion.  I also really liked Dmitry, Christopher, Gunnar, and Elena.  They all had very memorable designs.

-  In terms of least favorite designers, I am not a fan of Beatrice, Alicia, Buffi, Kooan, and Andrea.  This is based on my first impressions from this episode.

-  Although I had mentioned that Ven left me the strongest first impression, based on all the designs I saw, my FAVORITE looks were designed by Dmitry.  (How did he NOT make the top 3 is beyond me!!)

Here are my favorite coupled looks of the evening designed by Dmitry. I absolutely love both designs. They were visually captivating with beautiful silhouettes and brilliant styling details. They were also wearable but managed to have that unique quality and style memorability.

-  I thought it was pretty funny how Kooan’s responses were always so gracious and he would even reply, “Thank you very much” even when completely canned by the judges!  I think his work may just be a little too out there, so I can’t see him lasting too far in the competition, although I’m intrigued with what he will come up with next!

In the middle of the episode, there was a scene in the workroom where Beatrice expressed, “Sewing is harder than I thought.”  The moment I heard her say that, I was thinking there is no way she is going to last (how are you in a fashion designing competition and can’t sew?  Hmm, not sure how she overlooked that one!) and sure enough she was the first to go!

[On top of that, Beatrice's designs were definitely my LEAST favorite before I even heard her say that. Her designs had NO taste whatsoever, it was just a complete mess.]

[Fabulous Fitness Post] – 5 Healthy Tips To Stay in the Best Shape of Your Life

Posted in DIET, FABULOUS FITNESS POST, HEALTH, Uncategorized with tags , , , , on May 15, 2012 by stylebymeli

It’s been quite sometime since I’ve last written a [Fabulous Fitness Post] and besides fashion/beauty, which is ultimately the primary focus of this blog, I also like to incorporate a health/fitness component.  This is strictly content based, so there’s a lot of material to be read…Ready, Set, Go:

Shape Your Mind (Not Just Your Body)! -  When it comes to health/fitness, I think it’s important to approach it with a fresh state of mind.  People don’t realize how strong the mind is and if you put your mind and focus towards your health/fitness goals (whatever they may be), you will eventually get there.  It’s going to also require hard work and discipline on your part, but your mind will drive you to do whatever it takes to get you to where you want to be.

Although I was never an athlete, I have an admiration towards athletes not only for their strong bodies, but for their strong mindsets.  Most athletes have an incredible mental toughness with an “I can achieve anything” attitude.  Personally, I try to train my body like an athlete along with thinking like an athlete.  Physical strength also builds up my mental strength and overall positive attitude that I can conquer the world!  ;)

Pump up Your Protein Intake -  I always included protein into my diet (fish, eggs, chicken, turkey), but now I also incorporate an all natural whey protein into my diet.  I especially like to make smoothies with the protein powder or add it to Greek yogurt.  I seriously noticed a huge difference in the overall shape of my body as soon as I boosted my protein intake within a short amount of time.

If you are working out vigorously and lifting weights, it is absolutely necessary to increase your protein intake in order to repair muscles and build lean muscle tissue.  Also keep in mind that the body has to use more energy/fuel to burn protein than it does fat and carbohydrates.

Pay Attention to the Nutritional Content of your Food -  I have always been a huge believer of eating foods in their most natural state.  Why?  The body is designed to digest natural foods.  Once you start feeding it foods with artificial ingredients and “foods” produced from factories, it throws the body out of whack and it is only natural that the body is going to put on excess weight along with creating a myriad of other health risks.

I also don’t understand why there is such a huge emphasis on calories and following an allowance of calories within the day.  “I only ate 1200 calories today!  Wow, I’m so healthy!!”  (Umm, sorry to burst that health bubble, but that does not necessarily equate optimum health.  Let me explain why…)

For portion control, yes, I believe having certain calorie limitations can be beneficial; however, people need to really focus on the NUTRITIONAL CONTENT of their food (the vitamins, antioxidants, and quality of the food), NOT how many calories are consumed in a day or how many calories a food contains.  Think about it:  Is a 100 calorie apple the same as 100 calorie fat free cookie?  I absolutely do NOT care whether it’s labeled “fat free,” THIS IS A FOOD MARKETING TRAP!!  (Let’s not be fooled here, a cookie is still a cookie!!)

What I look for in a food label:  The majority of the foods I eat are natural foods, so they are not individually wrapped or come with a food label.  However, if I am faced with a food with a label, the first thing I look at is the INGREDIENTS.  (Isn’t it amazing how this is always listed on the BOTTOM of a food label?!?!  Ironic no?  Being that this is essentially what is most important, it’s always the calorie content that is listed first because companies do not want consumers to know what they are really using to create their products.  I guess it is not so ironic after all!).  I find this to be the most crucial information because I want to know, “what exactly am I eating?”  If the food has an ingredient with a 10 syllable word, you better believe I want nothing to do with it!

FYI, I also pay strong attention to the sugar content (you’d be surprised how much sugar is added to foods that are not even classified as a dessert) and the serving size.  This is also crucial.  Don’t assume that an item is a single serving size because that isn’t always the case (and more often times is not)!

Sculpt and Shape -  Although I find daily diet to play a stronger role in overall health (hence the expression, “you are what you eat”), if you truly want to see amazing results in terms of your overall physique, you’re going to have to invest the time in sculpting.  Surprisingly, I’m not speaking in artistic terms at the moment.  By “sculpting,” I essentially am referring to lifting weights and strength training moves.  Sculpting is the only way you are going to RE-SHAPE your body and create definition.  By adding a few daily cardio sessions to the mix along with a consistent (and challenging [or else you're not going to achieve your full potential]) strength training regime, you will transform the shape of your body.  Whereas if you only put the focus on cardio, you may lose the weight, but you’re not creating definition in your body.

Body sculpting not only builds up your strength and creates a statuesque physique, but also boosts your metabolism.  Did you know that a pound of muscle burns three times more calories a day at rest than a pound of fat?!?!  Did I by any chance motivate you to pick up a pair of weights yet? ;))

Eat Frequently for Energy, Vitality, and Overall Good Health - Again, this kind of goes back to my point of eating with the focus of the nutritional content of your food.  When you eat healthy foods, you should feel good inside and out.  I think of my body as a machine, the only way it’s going to function its very best is if I nourish it with the right nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

This also means that I need to be eating every few hours in order to keep the metabolism burning at its most efficient rate.  It should go without saying that you should NEVER starve yourself.  Think about it, how is your body going to run on empty?  It blows my mind that the first thing most people say when they need to lose weight is, “I can’t eat for the next few days.”  That is the absolute WORST thing you can ever do to your body.  Why aren’t people focusing on a healthy diet and consistent exercising?  Seriously.  That’s all it takes!

[What's Inside My Makeup Bag?] – Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipsticks

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte lipsticks - (my new obsession)

As you all know, I’m a total lip junkie.  I know people who go ga-ga over eyeshadows, but my true obsession has always been lip products (okay, and skincare too of course).

For starters, the packaging is absolutely stunning!!!  I’m such a visual person and a total sucker for beautiful things and this is no exception.  The tube is so luxurious and stylish!  I love it!

In terms of the lipstick itself (because obviously you can’t just judge a book by its cover), the quality is amazing.  It has a sheer, buttery feel but still delivers a beautiful color pay-off.  By that, I mean that I don’t have to apply a million layers of lipstick in order for the true color to show up (which is often the problem with lipsticks with a sheer formula).

I will admit though, these lipsticks don’t have the best longevity (I feel like after it is on for a little while, I’ll look at the color and it seems like it has faded a little), but I still believe these are fabulous and totally worth the price ($34 a tube).

In terms of shades, I currently own 3:

“Lingerie Pink (7)” -  BEAUTIFUL light baby pink.  I really love this shade, I have worn it paired with MAC’s “In Sync” lip pencil and it’s perfection.

“Praline Delight (24)” –  I ended up picking this up at Sephora a couple days ago, I just couldn’t wait to have this after trying it on for the first time at the store a week ago.  It’s a light taupe brown color.  I love taupes on the lips, I don’t know why, but they just seem to work.  I lined it with MAC’s “Stone” lip pencil.

“Tender Peach (26)” -  Another gorgeous shade.  It’s a light pinkish coral.  With this lipstick, I don’t feel I need a lip pencil as much and can just wear it by itself if I want to.

I also really like the fact that YSL offers an amazing assortment of shades.  There is a little of something for everyone and from a makeup artist’s point of view, I’m incredibly impressed.  (The worst is when you’re looking at a cosmetic line and you’re not wow-ed by the color selection, it’s SO disappointing!!).

[Have you ever tried these lipsticks?  Do you have a favorite?]

Ardell Fashion Lashes #106 – A New Favorite False Eyelash Style

A closer look at Ardell Fashion Lashes #106

Although I am exceptionally loyal to the MAC #48 lashes, I have been experimenting with other brands of false eyelashes and trying out different styles.  It’s just fun to experiment and false eyelashes are a staple to my makeup regime (mainly if I’m going out to an event).

I just recently purchased a pair of Ardell Fashion Lashes in the #106 style and I really like them!  I like that they look a little spikey, it gives a unique style.  They are also really comfortable and I plan on investing in these for my makeup kit for my clients!

Rocking a pair of Ardell Fashion eyelashes #106 (no mascara)...they are natural but still show up beautifully.

Here is a closer look at what they look like when you purchase them. You can purchase these anywhere and even order them online. I got these from a beauty supply store.

MAC’s Pink Friday Lipstick Update – I Did NOT Miss Out This Time!

Posted in LIPS, LIPS - LIPSTICKS, MAC MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP, ONLINE SHOPPING, PRODUCTS I LOVE, SHOPPING, Uncategorized with tags , , , on December 10, 2010 by stylebymeli

I am so excited to finally have placed an order for MAC’s Pink Friday lipstick!!!  I have not even gotten to see it in person (online exclusive), but I already know I am going to be obsessed with it being that I love to wear bright pinks.  Some of my favorite MAC lipsticks include Saint Germain, Pink Nouveau, and Chatterbox (check out my blog about how to choose your favorite lipstick and my MAC top 10 lipsticks if you have not already!)  I have heard from other people that “Pink Friday” is a mix between “Pink Nouveau” and “Snob” lipstick.  I will have to write an update once I receive it in the mail and take photos for everyone!

Here is a detailed overview of my experience so far…

Friday #1 :  November 26th (BLACK FRIDAY)

-  I did NOT bother logging on at midnight to get it.  I figured I could just order it when I woke up in the morning.  I got up around 8am to find it was sold out already.

Friday #2 :  December 3rd

-  I was logged into my MAC account and ready to go at 11pm (shopping online and adding regular stuff to my cart until the final minutes before midnight).

-  I had placed the lipstick in the bag successfully at 12:03AM.  It allowed for people to order as many as 4!  (I was only trying to order 1).

-  The website was very slow and as I was going through the process to complete my order, I noticed the lipstick was REMOVED from my cart with a message like, “This item has been removed from your cart and is sold out.”  The time was only 12:14AM!!!

-  I was EXCEPTIONALLY annoyed being that I obviously planned on buying it and thought it was crazy that it went ahead to remove the lipstick because I wasn’t checking out quick enough.

-  Determined that the next Friday, I was NOT going to miss out as I know what to expect.  Game plan:  Add to Cart and check out ASAP!!!

Friday #3:  December 10th (TONIGHT!!!)

-  Again, I logged into my account way in advance, waiting for the final moment that the site would allow for me to “Add in Cart.”

-  The website was the SLOWEST it’s ever been.  I was able to add it to the cart, but it took FOREVER for the actual check out page to load.  I notice this time, MAC limits people to just one lipstick, which is what they should have been doing to begin with!

-  I was very nervous that while it was loading the check out page, I would get another message saying it was being removed again, but after waiting very patiently…I got a confirmation!

-  I notice at 12:40AM, it is already SOLD OUT again, DESPITE the one lipstick per-person limit! Sold under an hour!  Much better than in 5 minutes though!

Friday #4:  December 17th (FINAL FRIDAY)

-  This is the last Friday you can order MAC’s “Pink Friday” lipstick.

-  Be sure to log on 12AM SHARP.  Preferably at least 15 minutes in advance.

-  You must already be signed-in to your MAC account to go through the check-out process quicker and if you do NOT have an online account with MAC online, CREATE one (with shipping and billing info already completed) before midnight so you are ready to go!

-  DO NOT WASTE TIME checking out.  When it’s in the cart, CHECK OUT ASAP!

-  Good luck everyone!  If you have success ordering it, please share a comment, review, or tweet me about it!  :)

ALSO – A person commented that you need to log on at midnight, EASTERN time!  I did not realize this was a factor (being I live in the east coast), but this is very important info to pass along to everyone else!  (THANK YOU CINDY for posting your comment).
