Here’s a look at what I’m inspired by this month…

floral rosettes - I love floral rosettes on clothing.  It adds such a feminine and beautiful styling touch to everything!

* crop tops - Crop tops have always been a key component to my signature style.  This season, I’m happy to see them more readily available and paired with high waisted bottoms.

* sheer cut outs - I like combining cut out styles with sheer fabrics.  It’s a nice combo, especially within a little black dress.

* bright rompers - Rompers are so comfortable and effortless chic.  I’m especially loving them in solid bright shades.

* turquoise accessories - I never get sick of turquoise.  It’s such a calming, yet energetic color.  This is great to add do an all white (or any other neutral) outfit.

* floral peep toe heels - The concept of a peep toe in a floral print is simply divine!

* retro inspired one-pieces - I am happy to see so many one pieces this season and greatly admire the retro inspired versions with a modern twist.

[Outfit Post] with Malibu Inspired Vintage Bathing Suit as a Romper…A Sizzling Hot Summer Look

Posted in CONSIGNMENT STORES, FASHION, MELI'S FAB FINDS, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, SHOPPING, SWIMSUITS, VINTAGE on August 26, 2011 by stylebymeli

I wore this outfit a few days ago on a hot summer day.

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  You’re never going to believe this, but I found this at the beginning of the week at my favorite consignment store in town (the same place that I recently picked up the 80′s vintage rhinestone bag) and this is actually a vintage BATHING SUIT.  When I saw it, I immediately thought, OMG what a hot romper.  Then I looked at the tag to find out this was actually a bathing suit (I’m guessing circa 1960′s?).  The best thing is, it looks like it was never worn, it’s in perfect condition!

It’s hard to believe this was a bathing suit because of the fact the fabric is so much thicker than today’s swimwear and that the body is so covered up that one would think this was an actual outfit.  FYI, the back is actually almost totally exposed, which truly makes this even hotter!  I love anything with an exposed back (as I’m all about a sexy back)!

The shoes are from Aldo, purchased almost 5 years ago while I was on vacation in Hawaii.  They are  metallic caged heels.  These shoes (despite the fact it’s starting to show signs of wear) get a lot of fashion mileage and ones I feel never go out of style.

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I think this is a nice outfit to wear at a summer party (as it’s festive and fun) or just casually.  Or better yet, why not pack this on your next exotic getaway?

[Stylish Notes]:

[I apologize that the photos sometimes come out really blurry (I'm not the most tech savvy person in the world), but I did take better close-up shots which really captured some crisp photos of the print itself].

-  Take special note of my lipstick choice and how it compliments the dark color within the print.  I wanted to choose a darker lip color to compliment but also for there to be contrast (the brightness of the print).  I constantly emphasis the key element of my styling which is all about creating contrast.

Remember, as I always say:  Building contrast will create VISUAL INTEREST.

If you follow this basic style rule, you will always be ahead of the style curve.  The overall outfit itself would be classified as REALLY bright in my opinion.  It was for this reason that I did NOT choose a bright lip (such as a bright coral–this would also be too matchy match in my opion) because I wanted there to be some sort of contrast (meaning visual interest).

-  Also notice how the white headband COMPLIMENTS the white from the print while also CONTRASTING against my dark hair (meaning the headband stands out much more).

-  It is AMAZING how impeccable the fit is of this garment on me.  This looks like it was custom made to fit my body perfectly.  Essentially, you want all your clothing to fit in this way.  I am SUCH a style nazi about good fit and will NOT settle for clothing that does nothing for my natural figure.  I’ve learned over the years that if the fit is NOT 100% right from day 1 (and it’s something that you cannot have altered), you will most likely NEVER reach for it because why are you settling for something that looks mediocre when you know there are PLENTY of things out there that can ENHANCE your silhouette and make you look like your absolute BEST?  (No perfect body required, Remember:  Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes).

Styling Confession:  If you haven’t noticed, I dress solely for aesthetic purposes.  By that I mean the overall look has to be incredibly pleasing to my eyes.  I’m such a ridiculously visual person, which comes natural for me because I am a true artist.  I don’t care so much for the “physical comfort” of something.  Too many people reach for “comfort” objects (such as baggy sweatpants) which may feel super cozy, but it’s doing absolutely NO JUSTICE to your natural figure.  Save your baggy pants for the comfort of your own home (or the gym if you’re going to choose to go baggy.  Personally, if I’m going to wear athletic pants to the gym, you better believe they are skin-tight and hug the curves of my body to perfection). ;)  Again, I’m all about visual effects.

I feel like I could totally pass for a Malibu Barbie in this photo (minus the blond hair that is ;)...Barbie can keep it LOL)! because the outfit looks so tropical.

A close-up of the print. It's absolutely stunning. The mix of colors and the print itself are breathtaking. I'm also loving the buttons down the center, it's a nice styling extra.

Summer 2011 Swimwear Trends – My Top Picks (Other Than Your Basic Bikini)

Posted in FASHION, ONLINE SHOPPING, SWIMSUITS with tags , , , , , , , on June 13, 2011 by stylebymeli

So the summer is heating up ladies!  Which means swimsuit season is in full effect.  I think for many, bathing suit shopping is not the most enjoyable thing in the world (myself included).

And I’ll be completely honest, I find the basic string bikini look is not flattering on MOST people, unless you have a naturally beautifully sculpted body that is proportioned in all the right places or if you happen to be a Victoria’s Secret model (but don’t be fooled by them either, they have Photoshop as their friends, LOL)!  The problem is, I find that most stores only carry basic bikinis.

Styling Confession:  I honestly don’t own that many bathing suits because I don’t find myself going to the beach all that often.  I currently only own bikini styles, although my favorite look is a one-piece with a twist.  I think I am one of the few women out there that actually favors a one-piece over a bikini!  I think the key emphasis is a one-piece with a twist.  By that I mean, I like one pieces with unique styling details and cut-outs.  Otherwise, it is way too conservative for my own taste!

I’m going to share with you OTHER ALTERNATIVES in terms of swimsuit styles that are not only strikingly hot, but also will do much more for the body than a skimpy bikini ever could.

(FYI, most of these happen to be from Victoria’s Secret, if you’re interested in more info, click on the image which will then direct you to the exact link for purchasing info):

Trend #1 – Cut-outs:  This is by far my favorite look this season.  Cut-outs are hot in fashion, so why not incorporate it in a sexy one-piece?  I love everything about this from the solid black to the cut-outs on the side, which gives a hip visual effect while also slenderizing the silhouette.  I plan on eventually purchasing this one-piece (or something like it) in the near future.  The style is unique and sexy all at the same time!

Trend #2- One-shoulder:  I don’t know what it is, but I have such a high liking to unique necklines like this one-shoulder one-piece.  This style is a rare find and I think it looks sophisticated and quite stunning on pretty much any figure.

I just think it adds high visual impact to the overall look and the animal print in coordination with this style makes it even more stylish.  (If it was a solid color, it wouldn’t nearly impress me as much).

Trend #3 – Monokini:  I have ALWAYS been a fan of the monokini.  Again, a hard style to find in stores, but I am noticing them pop up more and more.  I love all the styling details with this specific monokini.  It has the delicate ruffles that give it a feminine touch and the cut-outs on the sides are tasteful.  (I have seen some monokinis that border on trashy where the center of the swimsuit is too thin down the middle.  It’s just not as visually flattering in my opinion when it is designed in that way).

Trend #4 – Sexy Back:  Although this look kind of “ties in” (quite literally) with the cut-out trend, I just love when the back of a swimsuit catches the eye like this one piece.  The macrame knotting effect is just cool to look at while giving a subtle sexy look at the beach with a dose of style.

Trend #5 – High Waisted Bottom:  I am OBSESSED with this bathing suit by Diane von Furstenberg.  It is super flattering and has a classic retro vibe to it.  I love that bikinis with high waisted bottoms are making a splash on the swimsuit front.  I think they look flattering because the bottom half of the body is covered up more (whereas typically bikini bottoms are so tiny, they show too much skin and it just looks off balance).  I plan on buying a bikini that features high waisted myself!  Although more skin is covered up, I think the overall look is much more feminine and bombshell sexy!
