Floral Denim – Summer 2012 Trend

Posted in DENIM, FASHION, SHOPPING, SHORTS, STYLE COLLAGES with tags , , , , , on July 9, 2012 by stylebymeli

This season, I’m seeing floral denim pop up everywhere.  They are coming out in various hues and prints, making it a refreshing addition to your summer wardrobe.  For many, it may not seem like the most wearable trend, but paired with a solid neutral makes it look effortlessly stylish.

When I was much younger, I found myself naturally gravitate towards floral prints, but not as much as I’ve gotten older.  With this trend in full bloom, I may just have to re-consider!

[Outfit Post] with Bright Orange Cami, Black Cropped Vest, and Vintage Baby Pink Denim Shorts…A Casual Summer Look

Happy summer!  I wanted to share a summer look I created last week.  Although the look itself is very simple with easy layering pieces, the color combination is striking!

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing an orange cami from Express.  I have a ton of the Express camis that I typically wear to the gym, but I love the color of this one so much that this is a part of my regular wardrobe, NOT my fitness attire!  (Although, I’d have no problem hitting the gym in bright orange)!

The vest is by Yoana Baraschi.  I have definitely featured this piece in previous outfit posts being that it is so versatile and easy to style.  I love the cut of the vest along with the unique edging.

The baby pink denim shorts are Liz Claiborne.  (Don’t laugh)!!  These are actually high waisted, but I chose to layer the cami over the waistline in this look.  My other option when styling these would be to tuck the shirt into the shorts so you can see the horizontal line created at the waist.  I picked these up at a local consignment store and fell in love with them the moment I tried them on in the fitting room.  I think it’s very safe to assume that the shorts are vintage, 80′s?  Perhaps, 90′s?  I have no idea, but regardless, they are totally rockable in 2012!  (Hmm, I think I just made up a word).

The peep toe heels are Gucci.  I wear these a lot as you can see!  I always get a ton of compliments on them too no matter how I style these!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  This is a casual look for me.  The heels dress it up a bit but ultimately, I would still classify this as a daytime look.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I’m absolutely in love with this color combination.   Initially, I had styled the bright orange with the light pink shorts and thought that in itself was striking as they looked like summery creamsickle colors when paired together, but I wanted to step it up even more so I decided to then incorporate a splash of black by adding the vest and the heels.  Why?!  High contrast = visual captivation!

-  Being that the shorts are high waisted, visually, they make the waist look even smaller by cinching the waist even more.  These shorts happen to fit perfectly, slightly snug but not suffocating.  I wouldn’t buy them if they were too snug for comfort!

- It’s interesting to find that orange is the “it” color this season as it turns out that all my orange pieces I purchased a year ago.  I loved it then as much as I do now.  It’s just great to be ahead of the styling curve!

I happen to love the makeup I wore that day. Bright peachy cheeks with a semi-bright pink lip. That’s my signature makeup style the majority of the time and it especially works well in the summer and with this outfit.

[Style Vault] – Lilly Pulitzer High Waist Pink Giraffe Print Shorts

Posted in FASHION, MELI'S FAB FINDS, MELI'S STYLE VAULT, SHOPPING, SHORTS with tags , , , on June 18, 2012 by stylebymeli

Today, I purchased this lovely pair of high waist shorts by Lilly Pulitzer.  I’ve always admired her bright, preppy, chic prints and thought these shorts were simply darling.  I love a good pair of printed shorts to begin with and being they are high waisted, it just makes them that much better.  I already figured out exactly how I’m going to style these and think they will be perfect  for casual daytime wear along with for traveling purposes.

[Outfit Post] with Leopard Print Top, Black Cami, White Denim Shorts, and Gold Accents…A Fierce and Fabulous Look

Posted in DENIM, FASHION, JEWELRY, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, SHORTS with tags , , , , , , , , on June 9, 2012 by stylebymeli

I just wore this outfit yesterday.  I was working with clients and then went out to dinner later that evening.

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a black racerback cami with lace detailing on the top from Guess.  I have a ton of layering camis, especially black ones.

The leopard print top is from Forever 21.  I purchased this last year and still find creative ways to style it.  It’s actually longer in length, but I tied a knot so it created an asymmetrical line.

The white denim shorts are from Express.  They have gold zippers and hardware.  I love these shorts!

The gold heels are from Aldo.  They do often appear in my [Outfit Posts], meaning I do wear these a lot.  They are exactly 5 years old now and from my vacation in Hawaii.  They show signs of wear, but I simply can’t give these up.  Until I find a new pair of heels with this exact style, they are staying in my closet for more years to come!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I consider this a pretty casual look generally speaking (or for me at least) being that I’m wearing shorts, but I’m sure you can wear this out at night as well.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I like leopard print, but only in moderation.   I don’t think I ever wore this top loose (without the knot) because I feel like the leopard print would be just a little too overpowering for my taste.

-  Another reason I chose to tie the knot at the waist is because I hated the length of the top.  It wasn’t a long tunic style and hit the body at a weird spot.  I’m such a styling fanatic about these little nuances, but from a visual perspective, the length of a top and where it stops to create a horizontal line COMPLETELY makes a difference in terms of whether or not it’s going to accentuate the body.

- I happen to really like that the knot of the leopard top hits at the waist while also creating a diagonal, asymmetrical line which makes the look a little more interesting to the eyes.  (Notice that the diagonal line the top creates is in the same direction of my side bangs??  I swear to you, this was NOT planned, I’m just noticing this now in the photo.  I’m liking this extra styling detail)!

I chose to style this with gold accessories including my gold plated Meli necklace, chunky black and gold bracelet, and an open mouth tiger ring.

[Fashion Project] – How to Turn a Pair of Jeans Into Stylish Shorts with a Lace Trim

Posted in DENIM, FASHION, FASHION PROJECT, LACE, SHORTS with tags , on May 23, 2012 by stylebymeli

Here is a look at the original pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans before I re-vamped them into a hot pair of shorts with a white lace trim.

One side is complete while the other still needs to be hemmed and laced.

This is the first time I have ever attempted to transform a pair of jeans into a pair of shorts and thought I’d share the creative process with everyone.  I had a pair of Citizen of Humanity jeans that were not only too long in length, but also in a flare style (which I’m so over as I’ve strictly been wearing skinny jeans these days).

I decided that I wanted to transform them into a pair of shorts with a lace trim for added style.  It took me less than an hour to complete the shorts and I have to say, I’m extremely thrilled with the outcome!  I cannot wait to feature these in an upcoming [Outfit Post].

* First, I took an existing pair of shorts to compare the length so I knew how much to cut off each leg.  I added an extra inch to be safe as I know I wanted to give extra room for the hem.

* Next, I went out to find a lace trim.  I went with white, although I was totally open to black or even a fun color.  I was only able to find white and felt this complimented the color of the denim wash best anyhow.

* I was initially going to hand sew everything, but for convenience, I decided to use a glue gun.  I totally felt like I was having a Project Runway moment (LOL).  They’re not supposed to use glue guns, but hey…sometimes it truly makes life much easier while also getting the job done!

* I glued the frayed edges to create a clean, smooth hemline.  Then I went ahead and glued the lace trim all the way around each side leg, OVER the hemline.

Front side of shorts.

Back side of the shorts. Besides the lace trim that I added, I happen to like the pink and orange stitching design on the back pockets.  I cannot wait to wear these!
