[Outfit Post] with Bright Floral Print Dress, Black Belt, and Peep Toe Studded Heels…A Modern and Fresh Look

It’s been a little while since I’ve shared an [Outfit Post] and I wanted to show an outfit I wore over the weekend.

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a floral dress by Custo Barcelona.  I’m sure on most people it would be worn as a top, but on me it definitely passes for a dress and I wouldn’t want to wear it any other way as the length is just perfect!

The black bandeau top is by Free People.  The neckline of the dress is scooped low, so I had to layer something under it for for extra coverage.  (It looks like it’s all one piece but there is a bandeau underneath).

The belt is by Guess.  I have a ton of black belts but this is one of my favorites!  I love the gold hardware and the lace up detail down the center.

I’m wearing my black Gucci peep toe heels with this outfit although I highly considered wearing a nude shoe instead.  (I think either would have worked, but still favored the black over the nude wedge).

[Where to wear this outfit]:  This is a great day to night outfit in my opinion.  I went shopping and then out to dinner wearing this.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  This is one of my all-time favorite dresses I own.   Custo Barcelona is one of my favorite fashion labels and also happens to be the first fashion show I ever got to work backstage.  Their clothing is like buying a piece of artwork!  I not only love the floral print along with the bright colors, but also the style of the dress itself and the comfort.  The style is simple and classic so I don’t ever plan on retiring this.

Styling Confession: I always dress for visual aesthetics first.  I cannot begin to appreciate an outfit unless I like how it looks visually from head to toe.  Comfort always comes secondary, but it’s truly fabulous when you have an outfit that is visually striking and also incredibly comfortable!

-  I’m sure this outfit would have looked great without the belt, but for me it really completed the final look.  It just steps up the style while providing modern edge.  As a stylist, I love mixing soft feminine details with edgy pieces.

I took this photo before I added the accessories, but kept the accessories to a minimum being that it truly doesn’t need a whole lot to embellish the final look. (I wore a bracelet and ring, both with gold hardware to compliment the gold hardware in the belt and the back of the heels).

[Outfit Post] with Cropped Denim Vest, Taupe Mini Dress, and Red Lips…A Casual Day to Night Look

Posted in DENIM, DRESSES, FASHION, JEWELRY, OUTFIT POST, SHOES on July 15, 2012 by stylebymeli

I wore this outfit this past Friday.  I wanted something casual that could work for day or night.

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a cropped denim top from Armani Exchange.  This is actually a bathing suit top, but I have always worn it as a regular top.  I have had this for a couple years now and thought about bringing this to Beacon’s Closet but very thankful I have held onto this piece as I have found new ways to incorporate it into my wardrobe.

The taupe dress is from Guess.  I love the fit of their clothing and know that I can always rely on Guess clothing to fit my body like a glove.

The shoes are Charles David.  They are gold with bow styling detail at front and a cork heel.  Yes, I wear these all the time, especially in the summer!

I’m wearing my gold “Meli” nameplate necklace along with stacked bracelets and a gold studded ring.

[Where to wear this outfit]:  As I mentioned, I’d wear this day or night.  Obviously, not something I’d wear during the day making a trip to the supermarket, but for work, absolutely (cause I can)!

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I always say, “if it’s nice, buy it twice.”   I love this taupe dress so much that I also own it in black!  I can’t even remember which one I bought first, but I definitely made another trip to buy it in another color.  I have had these dresses for at least two years now and still rock them like I bought them yesterday.  They are so simple in style that they never go out of style.  Another good reason why it was a good investment to buy the same dress in various colors.

-  The denim vest is also nothing new but is so versatile that it can be styled very easily.  I was getting tired of wearing the vest with a top that I decided, why not layer this over a dress?

- When wearing solid, neutral colors or anything lacking brightness, I will try to find other ways to add brightness to the final look.  In this styling scenario, I chose to do this by wearing bright, red lips.  Other options could have been wearing bright shoes, accessories, or rocking a bright handbag.

I don’t wear red lipstick as much as a I should but this is not to say I’m opposed to it. I just like to save it for rare occasions or for times I use it to accessorize a look.

[Outfit Post] with Gold Polka Dot Black Top, High Waist Black Mini Skirt, and Gold Accessories…An Elegant Going Out Look

Posted in FASHION, JEWELRY, MELI'S FAB FINDS, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, VINTAGE with tags , , , , on July 8, 2012 by stylebymeli

I wore this outfit over the weekend.  I was just going out to dinner.  It’s very classic, simple, and versatile.  And stylish?  It goes without saying ;)

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a black stretch top with gold polka dots.  It doesn’t have a label and being it’s from a consignment store, I have no idea where it truly came from.  I’m not much of a polka dot person, but you can’t go wrong with this top.

The black stretch mini skirt is from Bebe.  It’s such a wardrobe staple.  I love the stretch as it accentuates all the natural curves of my body.  (If you haven’t noticed, I like my clothing tight on the body).

The shoes are Charles David.  They are gold with bow styling detail at front and a cork heel.

I’m wearing a ton of jewelry:  3 stacked bracelets, long necklace, and a ring.  Most of it is from Forever 21, although one of the bracelets is a snake bracelet from BCBG and one of the other bracelets is from my mother.  I love adding a vintage piece when I can!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I specifically wore this out just at night for dinner, although I would have no problem wearing this during the day. I like to be fancy–day or night!  This is simple fancy which allows for it to also be a great outfit for the daytime.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  When wearing mainly an all black outfit, it’s essential to play up the accessories.   Black and gold is one of my favorite styling combos, so I made sure to really add a good amount of gold jewelry to enhance the final look.  I love my bling!

-  The polka dot top is actually really sheer, so I had to layer a thin black cami underneath.  Whenever you feel something may be too revealing, follow your stylish instincts and do something about it!  In this case, layering was necessary.

- I was extremely tempted to finish off the look with a black and gold belt at the waist.  However, sometimes less is more, so I compensated the belt and exchanged it for the long gold beaded necklace.  I definitely made the right style call, although next time, maybe I would wear this again with a belt at the waist to switch it up.

To belt or not to belt? Another reason I skipped the belt at the waist is because the skirt already hits the waistline and cinches it, creating a horizontal line at the smallest part.

[Outfit Post] with Bright Orange Cami, Black Cropped Vest, and Vintage Baby Pink Denim Shorts…A Casual Summer Look

Posted in CONSIGNMENT STORES, DENIM, FASHION, MELI'S FAB FINDS, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, SHORTS, VINTAGE with tags , , , , , , on June 20, 2012 by stylebymeli

Happy summer!  I wanted to share a summer look I created last week.  Although the look itself is very simple with easy layering pieces, the color combination is striking!

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing an orange cami from Express.  I have a ton of the Express camis that I typically wear to the gym, but I love the color of this one so much that this is a part of my regular wardrobe, NOT my fitness attire!  (Although, I’d have no problem hitting the gym in bright orange)!

The vest is by Yoana Baraschi.  I have definitely featured this piece in previous outfit posts being that it is so versatile and easy to style.  I love the cut of the vest along with the unique edging.

The baby pink denim shorts are Liz Claiborne.  (Don’t laugh)!!  These are actually high waisted, but I chose to layer the cami over the waistline in this look.  My other option when styling these would be to tuck the shirt into the shorts so you can see the horizontal line created at the waist.  I picked these up at a local consignment store and fell in love with them the moment I tried them on in the fitting room.  I think it’s very safe to assume that the shorts are vintage, 80′s?  Perhaps, 90′s?  I have no idea, but regardless, they are totally rockable in 2012!  (Hmm, I think I just made up a word).

The peep toe heels are Gucci.  I wear these a lot as you can see!  I always get a ton of compliments on them too no matter how I style these!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  This is a casual look for me.  The heels dress it up a bit but ultimately, I would still classify this as a daytime look.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I’m absolutely in love with this color combination.   Initially, I had styled the bright orange with the light pink shorts and thought that in itself was striking as they looked like summery creamsickle colors when paired together, but I wanted to step it up even more so I decided to then incorporate a splash of black by adding the vest and the heels.  Why?!  High contrast = visual captivation!

-  Being that the shorts are high waisted, visually, they make the waist look even smaller by cinching the waist even more.  These shorts happen to fit perfectly, slightly snug but not suffocating.  I wouldn’t buy them if they were too snug for comfort!

- It’s interesting to find that orange is the “it” color this season as it turns out that all my orange pieces I purchased a year ago.  I loved it then as much as I do now.  It’s just great to be ahead of the styling curve!

I happen to love the makeup I wore that day. Bright peachy cheeks with a semi-bright pink lip. That’s my signature makeup style the majority of the time and it especially works well in the summer and with this outfit.

[Outfit Post] with Leopard Print Top, Black Cami, White Denim Shorts, and Gold Accents…A Fierce and Fabulous Look

Posted in DENIM, FASHION, JEWELRY, OUTFIT POST, SHOES, SHORTS with tags , , , , , , , , on June 9, 2012 by stylebymeli

I just wore this outfit yesterday.  I was working with clients and then went out to dinner later that evening.

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a black racerback cami with lace detailing on the top from Guess.  I have a ton of layering camis, especially black ones.

The leopard print top is from Forever 21.  I purchased this last year and still find creative ways to style it.  It’s actually longer in length, but I tied a knot so it created an asymmetrical line.

The white denim shorts are from Express.  They have gold zippers and hardware.  I love these shorts!

The gold heels are from Aldo.  They do often appear in my [Outfit Posts], meaning I do wear these a lot.  They are exactly 5 years old now and from my vacation in Hawaii.  They show signs of wear, but I simply can’t give these up.  Until I find a new pair of heels with this exact style, they are staying in my closet for more years to come!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I consider this a pretty casual look generally speaking (or for me at least) being that I’m wearing shorts, but I’m sure you can wear this out at night as well.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I like leopard print, but only in moderation.   I don’t think I ever wore this top loose (without the knot) because I feel like the leopard print would be just a little too overpowering for my taste.

-  Another reason I chose to tie the knot at the waist is because I hated the length of the top.  It wasn’t a long tunic style and hit the body at a weird spot.  I’m such a styling fanatic about these little nuances, but from a visual perspective, the length of a top and where it stops to create a horizontal line COMPLETELY makes a difference in terms of whether or not it’s going to accentuate the body.

- I happen to really like that the knot of the leopard top hits at the waist while also creating a diagonal, asymmetrical line which makes the look a little more interesting to the eyes.  (Notice that the diagonal line the top creates is in the same direction of my side bangs??  I swear to you, this was NOT planned, I’m just noticing this now in the photo.  I’m liking this extra styling detail)!

I chose to style this with gold accessories including my gold plated Meli necklace, chunky black and gold bracelet, and an open mouth tiger ring.
