3 Ways to Dramatically Extend the Longevity of Your Makeup

Posted in MAC MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP QUESTIONS, MAKEUP QUESTIONS, NARS on April 17, 2013 by stylebymeli

I’ve been meaning to share some advice regarding makeup and how long it should last.  People sometimes ask me how long my products last and I could never really give a concrete answer.  I recently decided to put dates on the product labels or mark on my calendar when I started a new product just so I have an idea how long they truly last me.

(Please note:  Keep me in mind, the longevity of a product will obviously vary from person-to-person depending on how often the product is used, the product itself, how much is applied at a time, and many other situational factors).

The last time I started my last bronzer compact, I wrote the date on the bottom just to see how long it was going to last.

In case you were wondering (and you know I have nothing to hide here ;)…I hold no beauty secrets and I’m here to blog to put it all out on the table)…it took me a whopping 9 months to the exact day to go through it!  I sometimes meet women who go through bronzer like water; they replace it every month or two and I can’t help but think, how is this possible?!  This has lead me to write this article to share with you ways to extend your makeup products so you’re not running to replace it as frequently.

Invest in high quality pigments and products:  With cosmetics along with many other things in life, I believe in the basic principle, you get what you pay for.  And cosmetics is no different.  When it comes to eyeshadows, I ONLY use MAC and NARS.  I’m always open to other brands but their shadows’ pigment quality is the best I’ve seen on the market.  What does that mean exactly?  Breaking it down for makeup novices, I mean a single swipe of a highly pigmented eye shadow will GO A LONG WAY.  Whereas with other brands that are not as pigmented, you may have to apply a few layers just for the color to show up.  This is not a good thing.  That means you will go through it so much quicker because you have to apply more of it to activate it (or show up).

Less is more…[you don't need to apply a massive amount to get the product to work]:  I like to watch how others apply their makeup and the majority of the time, I can’t help but notice that people are using WAY TOO MUCH product.  There is really no need to be digging so much into a product to get it to work.  If you do, that means the cosmetic quality is poor and it’s time to upgrade and invest in better quality.  Or you just have to practice on being more “light handed” (apply with softer strokes with light pressure) vs. heavy handed.  With practice, this is an easy habit to fix and can be fixed over time!

Switch it up:  If you have the option to not wear the same exact products everyday, naturally, the products will last longer.  I’ve NEVER gone through an entire tube of the same lipstick.  May sound shocking as a makeup artist, but it truly shouldn’t because you have to keep in mind I don’t wear the exact same shade everyday.  I switch it up.  Now with bronzer, I do wear the same exact bronzer everyday (–or I should say whenever I wear makeup, hey, I’m only human and have my no makeup days too!).  It still lasted me awhile being that the pigment quality is high and I don’t use a ton of it because again, I don’t need to use a ton for it to show up!  Again, back to this original point, if you have a variety of products to choose from and not using the same exact product everyday, it will last a long time!

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation – Still Very Much Obsessed

Posted in FACE, FOUNDATION, MAKE-UP, MELI'S FAB FINDS, MELI'S MAKEUP BAG, NARS, PRODUCTS I LOVE on September 15, 2012 by stylebymeli

Back in February I wrote about post regarding NARS Sheer Glow foundation and since then I have also tried a few others.  However, at the end of the day, I’m still in love with NARS Sheer Glow Foundation.  I realized that I should have matched myself a few shades darker being that their color system starts off really light (making it a great choice for lighter complexions).  Keep in mind they also carry a full range of colors that are suitable for darker skintones.

Not only do I love the look of sheer glow, but it’s unbelievable how many compliments I get on my skin and overall makeup in general.  (Trust me, my skin is not that perfect to begin with, I have been dealing with breakouts for the past couple years from hormonal imbalances.  I am very thankful for this foundation and I guess take some partial credit for being a really good makeup artist too of course!  ;)).

Currently, I’m wearing NARS Sheer Glow in the shade Punjab.

[My Thoughts on...] – NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 vs. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 – Oil Free

Posted in FACE, FOUNDATION, MAKE-UP, MELI'S THOUGHTS ON..., NARS, PRODUCTS I LOVE, SKINCARE, TINTED MOISTURIZERS on June 12, 2012 by stylebymeli

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 – and NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Recently, NARS came out with a tinted moisturizer that comes in 9 shades.  I matched myself to “Alaska,” which [sadly] is the second lightest shade in their color spectrum.  I had initially thought this was too light, especially moving into the summer season, but it turns out I really am that fair and I have to say, it is the perfect match!  FYI, in MAC terms, I’m a true NC25 bordering on NC20 (in Studio Fix Fluid).

I have been incredibly loyal to my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (oil-free version) ever since I started using it about a year ago.  I wear the shade, “Bisque” and out of the ten shades, this is the third lightest.  I love the silky, blendable texture and the fact that it actually provides amazing coverage.  In other words, I have been using this as my foundation.

However, this does not mean I’m completely married to it, I’m always open to new things!

[Beauty Confession]:  I have an obsession with creating perfect skin, so as a makeup artist, I’m always looking for the next best thing in terms of face products and skincare.  (That and a fabulous lipstick!  I don’t know why, but I’m always looking for a new lipstick…I have a slight addiction!)

About a week ago, I picked up a sample of the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 from Sephora, and originally, I wasn’t completely in love with it, mainly because I originally thought the shade I had chosen was too light (but the next shade was clearly too dark) and in terms of its consistency, it seemed to lack that buttery, blendable creaminess that was prevalent in the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer.

MY VERDICT: However, a week has now gone by (yes, the sample has truly been lasting that long, because as I always say, a little goes a long way) and although it’s a tough decision given they are both AMAZING products, I have to say that I’m leaning a little stronger towards the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30.

Why I’m Loving the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer:

-  For starters, I like the fact that NARS has a higher SPF content.  Personally, I try to shower my face with SPF because it is the number one thing you can do to prevent premature signs of aging (I don’t know about you, but I rather age like a fine wine than look like a leather couch, just saying! ;)) and let’s please not forget about skin cancer prevention ladies.  SPF is crucial, so the higher, the better!

-  Both products are exactly the same price, $42.  However, the amount of product does slightly vary:  LMTM = 1.7 oz and the NARS TM = 1.9.  So from an economical standpoint, NARS gives you a little more bang for your buck.

-  In terms of coverage, they are very close in my opinion.  I’d have to say that the NARS TM may be slightly more sheer than LMTM, but the coverage is buildable.

-  Besides the visual effects of a face product, in which BOTH products do provide a smooth, flawless, and natural finish, I’m also HIGHLY concerned about the skin benefits of the product (if it even provides any at all for that matter)!  Let me share with you the description of each product, and YOU tell me which you’re sold on going strictly by its description…

NARS – “Infused with lush, naturally derived ingredients, this lightweight tinted moisturizer immediately helps thirsty skin feel hydrated. It has been proven to help reduce the appearance of discoloration and dark spots caused by hyper pigmentation for a clearer and brighter complexion in just four weeks. Oil-free and luxurious, it obscures the appearance of lines, wrinkles, pores and other imperfections. SPF 30 adds a translucent veil of protection. “

Research results:
-84% felt their skin was more radiant and luminous
-81% felt the product smoothed out the surface of their skin
-81% felt the product gave them immediate hydration

Laura Mercier - “This lightweight foundation that can be reapplied as necessary, offers sun protection for sensitive or acne prone skin, oil control, and provides hydration to prevent dryness.”

Hmm…I don’t know about you, but this seems like a beauty no-brainer in terms of which tinted moisturizer provides the best long-term benefits for your skin.

Now I know it may be too soon to make this correlation, but I have to honestly say that the clarity of my skin has drastically improved within the past few days. I actually ALMOST forgot to even apply my concealer yesterday because I could actually have gotten away with just skipping it and wearing the tinted moisturizer by itself.  Talk about a miracle!

[What's Inside My Makeup Bag?] – NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in “Deauville”

Posted in FACE, FOUNDATION, MAKE-UP, MELI'S MAKEUP BAG, NARS, PRODUCTS I LOVE with tags , on February 15, 2012 by stylebymeli

As I recently shared, I picked up a sample of the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation and I have to say, I’m in love with it and now use it!

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been this impressed with a foundation, which is why I wanted to talk more about it.

After debating on shades, I am sticking with the color I first matched myself to, which is “Deauville.”  It’s the fourth lightest shade according to their color spectrum and described as, “light with neutral balance of pink and yellow undertones.”  (FYI, in the MAC color spectrum, I’m typically a true NC25, although sometimes I border on NC20, if the foundation runs dark).

Upon application, I thought to myself, “Whoa, this is a bit light” but in all actuality, I have very fair skin and once it’s spruced up with a good setting powder to warm up the skin a bit (currently, I’m using MAC’s Studio Careblend pressed powder in Medium) and bronzer (Tarte’s “Park Avenue Princess”, it comes out PERFECT!

Even though this foundation is called, “Sheer Glow,” I think the name is very misleading.  Yes, I guess you could classify this foundation as sheer, but it still has a good amount of coverage.  It truly perfects my skin while still looking fairly natural.  It’s also buildable, meaning if you want to boost the coverage, you really can with this stuff!

Also, I wouldn’t say this gives a glow to your skin.  When I hear the word “glow” in makeup terms, I expect there to be a shine or shimmer in the product.  This foundation gives a satin bordering on matte finish in my opinion, maybe a slight dewy glow at best.  I’d prefer this anyhow, because I like to add glow to the skin when using highlighting products and don’t necessarily think it’s needed within a foundation.

Why I’m Obsessed…

-  Honestly, I cannot get over how smooth and flawless my skin looks (both in photos and in-person).  I have not seen my skin look this good in a long time, so it’s kind of mind-blowing.  (Sorry, if this sounds like a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s the truth)!  As a makeup artist, I am obsessed with skin perfection and this definitely enhances the appearance of my skin tremendously to a point where it’s too good to be true!

-  I have to say, the foundation color is definitely dead on in terms of its color match.  It really blends in seamlessly!

-  For my skin, a little goes a long way.  I don’t need a lot of it as the coverage is phenomenal in terms of evening the skin tone.  I don’t like using a foundation that requires a heavy use of the product.  If so, then it’s way too sheer.

[Is anyone familiar with this foundation, if so, what are your thoughts?]
