NARS Sheer Glow Foundation – Still Very Much Obsessed

Posted in FACE, FOUNDATION, MAKE-UP, MELI'S FAB FINDS, MELI'S MAKEUP BAG, NARS, PRODUCTS I LOVE on September 15, 2012 by stylebymeli

Back in February I wrote about post regarding NARS Sheer Glow foundation and since then I have also tried a few others.  However, at the end of the day, I’m still in love with NARS Sheer Glow Foundation.  I realized that I should have matched myself a few shades darker being that their color system starts off really light (making it a great choice for lighter complexions).  Keep in mind they also carry a full range of colors that are suitable for darker skintones.

Not only do I love the look of sheer glow, but it’s unbelievable how many compliments I get on my skin and overall makeup in general.  (Trust me, my skin is not that perfect to begin with, I have been dealing with breakouts for the past couple years from hormonal imbalances.  I am very thankful for this foundation and I guess take some partial credit for being a really good makeup artist too of course!  ;)).

Currently, I’m wearing NARS Sheer Glow in the shade Punjab.

[What's Inside My Makeup Bag?] – NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in “Deauville”

Posted in FACE, FOUNDATION, MAKE-UP, MELI'S MAKEUP BAG, NARS, PRODUCTS I LOVE with tags , on February 15, 2012 by stylebymeli

As I recently shared, I picked up a sample of the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation and I have to say, I’m in love with it and now use it!

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been this impressed with a foundation, which is why I wanted to talk more about it.

After debating on shades, I am sticking with the color I first matched myself to, which is “Deauville.”  It’s the fourth lightest shade according to their color spectrum and described as, “light with neutral balance of pink and yellow undertones.”  (FYI, in the MAC color spectrum, I’m typically a true NC25, although sometimes I border on NC20, if the foundation runs dark).

Upon application, I thought to myself, “Whoa, this is a bit light” but in all actuality, I have very fair skin and once it’s spruced up with a good setting powder to warm up the skin a bit (currently, I’m using MAC’s Studio Careblend pressed powder in Medium) and bronzer (Tarte’s “Park Avenue Princess”, it comes out PERFECT!

Even though this foundation is called, “Sheer Glow,” I think the name is very misleading.  Yes, I guess you could classify this foundation as sheer, but it still has a good amount of coverage.  It truly perfects my skin while still looking fairly natural.  It’s also buildable, meaning if you want to boost the coverage, you really can with this stuff!

Also, I wouldn’t say this gives a glow to your skin.  When I hear the word “glow” in makeup terms, I expect there to be a shine or shimmer in the product.  This foundation gives a satin bordering on matte finish in my opinion, maybe a slight dewy glow at best.  I’d prefer this anyhow, because I like to add glow to the skin when using highlighting products and don’t necessarily think it’s needed within a foundation.

Why I’m Obsessed…

-  Honestly, I cannot get over how smooth and flawless my skin looks (both in photos and in-person).  I have not seen my skin look this good in a long time, so it’s kind of mind-blowing.  (Sorry, if this sounds like a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s the truth)!  As a makeup artist, I am obsessed with skin perfection and this definitely enhances the appearance of my skin tremendously to a point where it’s too good to be true!

-  I have to say, the foundation color is definitely dead on in terms of its color match.  It really blends in seamlessly!

-  For my skin, a little goes a long way.  I don’t need a lot of it as the coverage is phenomenal in terms of evening the skin tone.  I don’t like using a foundation that requires a heavy use of the product.  If so, then it’s way too sheer.

[What's Inside My Makeup Bag?] – YSL Rouge Pur Couture 24 “Blond Ingenu” and Lots of New MAC Lip Products

Posted in LIPGLOSSES, LIPS, LIPS - LIPSTICKS, MAC MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP, MELI'S MAKEUP BAG, PRODUCTS I LOVE, SHOPPING, YSL with tags , on November 16, 2011 by stylebymeli

I honestly don’t buy that much makeup for myself anymore unless I’m really running low on a something I use on a daily basis.  However, when it comes to lip products, I don’t seem to hold back.  I’m constantly experimenting and just love trying new shades!  I’ll pretty much wear anything on my lips.  I think most stylish people are obsessed with lip products as they know it could make or break any look.

I’m totally into YSL lipsticks (I really think they make the best lipsticks), but since they are pricey, I don’t really indulge all the time.  I finally caved in and purchased YSL’s Rouge Pur Couture in “Blond Ingenu” (#24) as I have been wanting this for quite some time.  It’s very neutral light pink with a warm peach undertone.  Every time I would try it on at a store, I just fell in love with it!

In terms of new MAC lip products, I am a HUGE fan of their new Pro Longwear lip pencils.  I usually prefer the twist-up pencils for the convenience but in terms of longevity, these really go the extra mile.  So far I purchased “Nice N Spicy” and “Morning Coffee” (both are neutral shades that would go with a lot of different colors).  I’m also dying for “In Anticipation” and “Staunchly Stylish.”

I tend to LOVE all of MAC’s Pro Longwear products (in terms of their lip products) and have always been in love with their original double-ended Pro Longwear lip colors.  I own almost all of them at this point as they really work!  This is why I really wanted to try one of their Pro Longwear lipglasses which came out a couple months ago.  I haven’t gotten a chance to really see how well they last throughout the day (I doubt it will really live up to the expectations as lipglosses are NOT meant to be long-wearing) but what I really like about these glosses are the visual impact they give.  It seriously gives my lips so much dimension, they look exceptionally full.  The texture of the gloss is very thick and somewhat sticky but it doesn’t bother me to be honest.  I wear lip products all the time, so I’m used to the feeling.  Kind of like how I wear high heels all the time, it doesn’t phase me at all because I wear them all the time!!

From the current holiday collection, “Glitter and Ice,” I picked up “Pleasure Principle” Dazzleglass which initially came out years ago when Dazzleglass first ever came out.  At the time, I didn’t pick up this shade and when I saw it came back in this collection, I realized I had to have it.  It’s pretty much clear but has a blue sparkle/glitter in it which I think would be a great finishing gloss to a lot of lip colors.  I seem to gravitate towards the blue undertones.  Don’t know why exactly, but I just do!

I also picked up “Double Spin” cremesheen lipstick which is VERY OUT OF CHARACTER of myself as it’s ridiculously light and I’m not typically a huge fan of light lipsticks (I’m very fair and hate when my lips don’t contract my skin).  However, when I tried it on, I somehow saw the beauty in it.  It’s a color I wouldn’t be able to wear effortlessly by itself, meaning I’d NEED to line it and add gloss to create depth but I’m totally okay with that.  I plan on wearing it when I create a dramatic smokey eye look.

[PS- So I have all these new lip products and have not even begun wearing any of them yet because I have been sick this entire month :( and I don't want to contaminate them.  This would also explain the extended absence from my blog this month.  My energy level has been so low, I just haven't had the energy to blog.  I've really been trying to take care of myself but can't seem to get better!]

[Is anyone familiar with any of these lip products?]

[What's Inside My Makeup Bag?] – Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipsticks

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte lipsticks - (my new obsession)

As you all know, I’m a total lip junkie.  I know people who go ga-ga over eyeshadows, but my true obsession has always been lip products (okay, and skincare too of course).

For starters, the packaging is absolutely stunning!!!  I’m such a visual person and a total sucker for beautiful things and this is no exception.  The tube is so luxurious and stylish!  I love it!

In terms of the lipstick itself (because obviously you can’t just judge a book by its cover), the quality is amazing.  It has a sheer, buttery feel but still delivers a beautiful color pay-off.  By that, I mean that I don’t have to apply a million layers of lipstick in order for the true color to show up (which is often the problem with lipsticks with a sheer formula).

I will admit though, these lipsticks don’t have the best longevity (I feel like after it is on for a little while, I’ll look at the color and it seems like it has faded a little), but I still believe these are fabulous and totally worth the price ($34 a tube).

In terms of shades, I currently own 3:

“Lingerie Pink (7)” -  BEAUTIFUL light baby pink.  I really love this shade, I have worn it paired with MAC’s “In Sync” lip pencil and it’s perfection.

“Praline Delight (24)” –  I ended up picking this up at Sephora a couple days ago, I just couldn’t wait to have this after trying it on for the first time at the store a week ago.  It’s a light taupe brown color.  I love taupes on the lips, I don’t know why, but they just seem to work.  I lined it with MAC’s “Stone” lip pencil.

“Tender Peach (26)” -  Another gorgeous shade.  It’s a light pinkish coral.  With this lipstick, I don’t feel I need a lip pencil as much and can just wear it by itself if I want to.

I also really like the fact that YSL offers an amazing assortment of shades.  There is a little of something for everyone and from a makeup artist’s point of view, I’m incredibly impressed.  (The worst is when you’re looking at a cosmetic line and you’re not wow-ed by the color selection, it’s SO disappointing!!).

[Have you ever tried these lipsticks?  Do you have a favorite?]

[What's Inside My Makeup Bag] – Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid (#3) + NARS “Albatross” = PERFECT Cheek Highlighting Combo

Posted in FACE, MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP BRUSHES, MELI'S MAKEUP BAG, POWDERS, SKINCARE with tags , on May 19, 2011 by stylebymeli
Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer (#3) and NARS "Albatross" highlighting powder

Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer (#3) and NARS "Albatross" highlighting powder - My everyday highlighting combo, they blend perfectly together!

I just blogged in my last post that I picked up the Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer in shade #3 from The Makeup Show on Monday and I have to say, it’s truly as amazing as I thought it would be!

The color is a beautiful light yellow gold with a slight shimmer (not overly shiny).  I think that being that the consistency is a sheer liquid, this would look great on pretty much all skin tones.  Stila also makes this product in a shade #1, which is more of a white pearl in the bottle.  This is very pretty too and would look best on very fair skin with a pink undertone.  (I feel with the gold, it compliments more people).

I have also blogged on multiple occasions regarding NARS “Albatross” which continues to be my highlighting powder of choice.  I absolutely love the way it looks on my skin.  Even though it appears white, when you look at it closely, it actually has traces of gold and once applied to the skin, leaves a highlight with a slight gold tone.  This would also flatter most people, more so people on the fair side though!  (Darker complexions would definitely benefit more from a highlighter with more of a beige bronze undertone in it).

Directions for how to Use the Stila liquid luminizer AND NARS powder highlighter:

-  After I have applied my skincare and liquid foundation, I then take the brush tip applicator from the Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer and dot along the top of my cheekbones and a little under the eye too (for a brightening effect).

-  I then use my fingertips and blend the liquid softly.  It leaves my skin with a slight glow and soft highlighting effect.  (A little goes a long way, I only need to use a very small amount)!

-  I set my entire face with a powder as I normally would.  As I recently mentioned, I am using Tarte’s Smooth Operator loose powder.

-  I personally use a MAC #165 brush (which unfortunately was a limited brush and I highly regret only owning one of these!  I only have one for my personal use) and apply the NARS “Albatross” along the same area, which again is the top of the cheekbones.  I usually only apply a REALLY small amount because there is already a liquid highlight in place.  However, sometimes I build it up by applying the NARS “Albatross” with a heavier hand, if I really want to enhance the cheekbones even more.  For everyday use, I like to keep it a little more subtle.

Styling Confession:  It wasn’t until recently that I became pretty obsessed with highlighting.  It was one of those things that I would do some days but not on an everyday basis.  Now I have gotten to a point where I LOVE highlighting because I have finally discovered products that really give me the look I want.

I believe a little highlighting to the cheekbones not only accentuates them (high cheekbones is always seen as an attractive facial characteristic), BUT I swear to you that it makes the face appear at least 5 years younger.  I feel it gives the skin that boost of youthfulness!  REALLY!  I think everyone can benefit from it!

[Why the need for two highlighting products?!?!]

Okay, I know it may seem a little excessive to be using two products for one job, which is to highlight the cheekbones.  However, you have to understand that I am using two COMPLETELY different mediums (a liquid and a powder).  I believe creating perfect skin is all about the way you layer your mediums to create depth and smoothness.  Kind of like a great outfit, it requires a layering process…from your accessories to your shoes to the pieces that create the final look of an outfit.  Makeup is NOT any different.

The liquid luminizer adds an initial GLOW to my skin itself and brightening effect, while the powder highlighter will actually build a little more DEPTH to the cheekbones by making them look more pronounced (visually bring them more forward).  Again, I want to emphasize that I’m only using a small amount of each product.  That’s why it still looks very natural on my skin.

*** Please Read (VERY IMPORTANT):  I find many people have a major misconception that the more makeup products a person uses, the more “cakey” and unnatural it starts to look.  It is NOT about HOW MANY products one uses that determines the naturalness of a look, it is the APPLICATION of the product (Example:  the brush a person uses to apply the product OR how much of the product a person chooses to use) that will determine how natural or unnatural a look is.

I hope you all enjoyed reading about my absolute favorite cheek highlighting combo and that this better clarifies the steps involved on how to use these products!  And more importantly, I hope I have further enlightened you all on what “highlighting” is all about, since I feel it is a subject matter most people are not completely familiar with!

[Do you highlight your cheekbones, if so, what are your favorite products to use?]
