[Fabulous Fitness Post] – How I Stay in Shape During the Holiday Season (and How You Can Too)!

Posted in DIET, FABULOUS FITNESS POST, FITNESS, HEALTH, HOLIDAY on November 13, 2012 by stylebymeli

It’s hard to believe that festive time of year is quickly falling upon us.  Thanksgiving is about a week away leading up to Christmas which will be here sooner than we all realize.

While for many, this is the worst time of year for our waistlines, surprisingly, I tend to stay in the best shape of my life from now well into the upcoming new year.  Generally speaking, I’m in decent (hey, there is always room for improvement!) shape year-round due to my dedication to a healthy lifestyle, which includes clean eating and religious workouts.  Yet somehow, during the holiday season, I’m in even better shape for a couple explainable reasons:  1)  I absolutely refuse to let myself go and look like an oompa loompa come New Year’s (sorry, ain’t happening, I love myself too much to even let myself to go to begin with)…2)  With holiday parties, my birthday falling between two holidays (Christmas and New Year’s), and other non-stop festivities, looking my best is just at a higher priority than other times of the year.

So what does this mean?  What do I have to do, resort to starving myself?  Start a cleansing diet where all I do is drink water mixed with cayenne pepper and maple syrup all day (umm, can we say GROSS)?  (Can I strongly answer with a BIG FAT NO to both those questions…FYI, both those options are incredibly detrimental to your body, so please, don’t even fathom such things…I’m just pointing out extremes that people go through that are completely UNnecessary).

Okay, my answer:  All it truly means is that my motivation is at a natural high and that I have to pump up the discipline.  Everything is within reach with a good dose of motivation and discipline.  The motivation comes from within (you either have it or don’t) but as for the discipline, I can explain a few things I do to keep this principal in check:

1-  Eat extra, extra clean:  I would say that I eat pretty clean to begin with.  My staple foods include grapefruit, kale, spinach, apples, etc.  Pretty much foods that are natural and are only one ingredient that also provide nothing but nutrients to fuel my body with energy.  However, I do have a sweet tooth so this time of year, I really cut back sugar as much as I can (I try to limit sweet treats to only one day a week meaning 6/7 days, no sweets).  If you cut back on these cravings, you’ll find the body on its own will start to crave them less.  (Out of sight, out of mind right?)

2-  Lift more weights (cardio is not enough):  I probably work out the most during the summer months where the weather is nicer and I could run outside pretty much every day.  Add extra runs plus my regular workouts which incorporate lifting and minimal cardio.  One would think that I would be in the best shape that time of year but being I’m slightly less disciplined with my eating habits, the extra running really isn’t enough.  Which is why I always stress the importance of lifting weights because this is what is going to truly change the SHAPE of your body.  By shape I mean a tighter physique (muscle takes up less space than fat) and less overall inches.

3-  Find a way to push your body everyday:  I try to find time (about 45 minutes to an hour) every single day of the year to dedicate to my body.  Even on busy days, something as minimal as a set of push-ups or a 10 minute jog around the neighborhood is better than nothing in my book.  However, pushing your body and challenging it in ways it didn’t realize it was even capable of is what really is going to lead to rewarding results.  Besides maintaining optimal health, isn’t achieving results the ultimate goal?  To push my body more, I really focus on toning/lifting (which again leads to a sculpted physique) by increasing weights and changing up my workouts as much as possible so my muscles don’t get used to the same routine.

4-  Save indulgences just for the festivities:  If you can dedicate eating clean everyday and fitting in challenging workouts daily, then this leaves room for some indulging (but not going overboard) for those special holiday events.  If you stay disciplined, then these events allow you something to look forward to!  I know for myself, I look forward to them and it’s a time that should be enjoyed.  Does that mean that I will drink a bottle of wine and polish off a plate of cookies as a reward for being so disciplined?  Obviously not, but it does mean I can enjoy a glass (or two) of wine and maybe a cookie.

If you listen to my fitness tips, you can look forward to looking and feeling great!  From now until the end of the year, I will contribute some more health/fitness blogs to step up your motivation and provide you valuable health related information that will take your fitness level to greater heights.

I live off of green smoothies. I always start my morning with a home made smoothie which I switch up depending on the ingredients on hand and sometimes drink up to two a day. They may not seem appetizing but they’re exceptionally nutritious, provide energy, and I personally love the taste!

Holiday Weekend Recap and New Shoes from Santa

I love this holiday mug, it's so true!

I hope everyone had a spectacular holiday weekend (if you celebrate Christmas).  It was especially great for me as the past couple days were the first days off I had the entire month.  I finally had the opportunity to relax and also spend quality time with my beloved friends/family.  I thought it would be great to write a post sharing my weekend with everyone!

On Friday, I threw a holiday party at my home for my closest friends.  It was great seeing everyone including friends that traveled out of state and ones I had not seen in a very long time.

Here is a photo from my party with a few of my best friends. I am wearing a dress from Bebe and finally got a chance to wear red lips this holiday season! I knew that red lips with a black and white dress is just styling perfection. It's just classic. FYI, I'm wearing MAC "Lasting Lust" prolongwear (as I've stated is the only red I wear).

On Saturday (Christmas Eve), I had my parents over for an early dinner that I made which was nice because I don’t get to have them over nearly as often as I’d like to.  Although my parents live about 15 minutes away, It’s just hard to spend quality time together with all our schedules varying dramatically.

A closer look at my living room. I honestly did not have much time to do much holiday decorating so my tree is pretty simple.

Christmas Day started off with lots of baking (and where I somehow managed to fit in a one hour jog outside since it was perfect running weather).  The rest of the day I spent with close friends that live in my neighborhood.  The day definitely went by fast and I didn’t arrive home until after midnight.

I made chocolate mint brownies with crushed candy cakes and organic blondie bars with a layer of white chocolate on top, then topped with dried cranberries and chopped walnuts. I like to put a creative spin when I bake and make it my own.

Lastly, I wanted to share with everyone a stunning pair of shoes I got for Christmas (I picked them out of course!)

These Gucci snakeskin peep toe heels are existe. The actual peep toe itself is really unique and features a triangle cut-out. It's the little styling details that make or break a shoe.

I love the gold studded heel. These shoes are both classy and edgy all at the same time, which completely captures my style aesthetic. I like to look modern, edgy, and fashion-ward, but with a high level of taste, soft sophistication, and full of femininity.

[Outfit Post] with a Sparkly Nude Dress, Jeffrey Campbell Gold Unicorn Heels, and Festive Jewelry…A Glamourous Holiday Look

For starters, I hope everyone is having a wonderful month!  I greatly apologize for my absence (don’t worry, it’s only temporary)!  Anyhow, I wanted to share a look I captured from this past weekend.  I wore this to a Christmas party.

I love the holiday season as it gives me an opportunity to dress up more and I can be much more experimental with my style.

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a sparkly mini dress from H&M.  (H&M, who would ever think?)  To be completely honest, I don’t shop there.  I’m not a fan of the quality of most their clothing and they really don’t fit me too well.  I find that their clothes are not built for curvy women.  The store is very hit-or-miss so I don’t even bother shopping there.  Surprisingly, I bought this dress off a friend of mine who was trying to sell it to Beacon’s Closet but they didn’t take it.  Oh well, their loss, NOT MINE!  ;)  I LOVE the dress except the silver sparkles/glitter sheds! (This is what I mean by their stuff not being top notch in the quality department).

[Styling Confession]:  This dress was actually MUCH longer, but anyone who knows my style, knows that any dress or skirt I own has to hit above the knee.   [Why?  Showing more leg will actually visually make the appearance of the legs look much longer (let's not forget I am only 5'1"...but I guess you would never know by all the high heels I wear ;)!]

The shoes are Jeffrey Campbell and were recently featured in my [Style Vault].  I was SO VERY excited to finally rock these!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  This is definitely a party look.  It’s fun, fancy, and fabulous…all at the same time!

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I really had NO intentions to wear this dress with black tights, but being that my tailor hemmed this dress a little TOO SHORT, I didn’t really have a choice in the matter.  In a styling situation like this, wearing black tights is the perfect solution.  This way you don’t feel like you’re half naked (DEFINITELY NOT what I was going for) and you can manage to wear the dress in a tasteful manner.

-  Surprisingly, I actually ended up liking the black tights paired with this dress as it created a high contrast against the nude dress.  My styling aesthetic is all about creating the perfect contrast.

 - I absolutely love the ruching effect down the sides of the sleeves and in the center towards the top of this dress.  It’s just an extra styling detail that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Closer look at my jewelry. I am wearing my gold plated "Meli" necklace, a cocktail ring, and I stacked two beautiful bracelets: a vintage white beaded one that my mother owned and a Guess green jeweled bracelet. They look great together and the green adds just a little pop of color.

- I’m also all about sparkles for the holiday season.  I mean of course you can wear sparkly stuff year-round, but I personally like to save it for the holidays and special occasions.

In case you wanted to take a closer look at my hair (it’s actually styled!)and makeup…

I had my hair curled (wish I could say I did it myself, but I can't style hair whatsoever. All I did was throw it half-up once I got home). With makeup, it took me awhile to figure out how to coordinate it with the outfit. I really wanted to wear a red lip with this, but I felt I would run the risk of looking over-styled (sparkly dress, gold shoes, curly hair, and then a red lip?! It's like, "Whoa Meli, let's take down the style down a notch, no?!") Hence I went a little smokey with the eyes and a bright baby pink lip (MAC "Saint Germain" lipstick). I couldn't ask for a better styling outcome.

[Thanks for viewing!  Thoughts?]

My 2011 Beauty/Style Holiday Wishlist…Just a Few Things I Really Want This Year

Posted in HANDBAGS, HOLIDAY, MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP BRUSHES, SHOPPING, YSL on December 15, 2011 by stylebymeli

I cannot believe that Christmas is only 10 days away, while the year is also quickly coming to a close.  Thankfully, I have gotten about 90% of my Christmas shopping complete and almost everything is wrapped and snug under the tree.

I’ve been spending a lot of time shopping this month for friends and family, which has also allowed me to do some personal shopping for myself where I have come across a few things I would LOVE to have!  There’s honestly nothing I truly NEED right now, but there are definitely a few beauty and style things that are on my radar!

My Beauty/Style Holiday Wishlist:

*  NARS Yachiyo kabuki brush #27 – I heard this is an amazing brush and by the looks of it, it truly looks exquisite!

*  Ole Henrikson Truth Serum Collegen Booster – I have been wanting this for quite sometime now.  I’m just in dire need of a face serum (I currently don’t have one at the moment).

[Based on its reviews and by using ample samples from Sephora, I really like everything about it!  I'm all about the vitamin C complex and its anti-aging effects!  (Gotta keep the skin tight and flawless!)]

*  YSL Rouge Pur #22 “Pink Celebration” lipstick - I love YSL lipsticks and would love to add this one to my collection.

[This is a pretty bubble gum pink with a blue undertone.  I tend to always gravitate towards those shades.  It kind of reminds me of MAC's "Saint Germain" lipstick, which is my all-time favorite shade.]

*  Wallet – Although I’m very in much love with my current wallet that’s from Harrod’s (a popular department store in the UK), I have been rocking it for the past few years and it’s kind of time to retire it.  The wallet is showing some wear and honestly, I need a change!

[I'm currently lusting Kate Spade's "zip travel wallet" in a cream color pebbled leather.  It is an oversized wallet with a very simple design.  I just like the size of it and how organized it is inside!  The only problem is, it's not current so I cannot find it anywhere!]

*  Fur bag –  I have been looking for a fur bag for quite sometime now, they are just hard to come by these days!

This is a mink fur bag by Valentino. I like the shape. The color is also interesting.

[What do you want this holiday season?]
