[Makeup Trend Focus] – Indigo/Teal Eye Makeup with Pastel Accents

I just wore this look over the weekend for my parents’ anniversary party.  Being it was for an event, I strayed away from my basic neutrals and wanted something a little more dramatic.

-  With the eyes, I started off with a light shimmery lid and then smoked out the corners with an indigo blue eye shadow.  Specifically, I’m using MAC’s “Plumage” in the corners which is the only dark blue eye shadow I even attempt wearing.  It is a warm indigo blue and compliments my skin very nicely.  As a bottom liner, I layered a thick black pencil in the lash line followed by a liquid teal liner.  I LOVE colored eye liner on the bottom, it visually makes the eyes look lighter than they really are!

-  I wanted soft, warm cheeks and picked a pastel coral.  The coral also contrasts with the blue tinted eye makeup being that orange and blue are opposite colors on the color wheel.

-  For the lips, I never like anything too light unless there is a hint of brightness which is why I went for a light, bright baby pastel pink color.  It adds a subtle brightness to my face but not too light to the point where it washes me out.

I’m wearing my new Ardell Double Up eyelashes in the #203 style. (WOW, do they make a difference or what?!)

[Makeup Question] – Bottom Mascara (Is it necessary or can it be skipped completely)?

Posted in EYE MAKEUP, MAKE-UP, MAKEUP QUESTIONS, MASCARA on July 14, 2012 by stylebymeli

This is a question that was recently asked by a client of mine and one that I find many people wonder about.

MELI’S ANSWER:

For me, this answer is situational meaning I cannot provide a yes or no answer.

Regarding whether it makes a visual difference, yes, eyelashes (when enhanced with mascara or false lashes are applied) will always make a visual difference than when left completely in its natural state.

Personally, I NEVER wear bottom mascara and tend to skip mascara the majority of the time.  Reason being that I don’t have naturally very long/full eyelashes and my bottom lashes are pretty non-existent.  I don’t see the point in putting in the effort to apply bottom mascara when there is very little hair for the mascara wand to grab on to.  Keep in mind, this is for me personally.

However, generally speaking, I like when the eyelashes (both top and bottom) are enhanced because it not only defines the eyes more but really makes them more pronounced, especially in photography.  The majority of the time, I will first ask a client if they have a preference towards bottom mascara or not.  (I’d say it’s about 50/50 in terms of whether people already wear it or not).  If I’m given the, “whatever your professional opinion is” as the answer (which is always the answer I most often like to hear), I will judge the situation based on a couple factors:

1)  Does the person have long/full bottom lashes to begin with?

2)  Is the hair too light/fair (such as blond)?

If the answer is YES to any of these questions, I will go ahead and apply bottom mascara.  More specifically, if the person has bottom eyelashes, I like to pop them even more with mascara.  If the person has very light hair, I find that a coat of black mascara is necessary to create contrast so they don’t just blend in with the face.  As I mentioned previously, the only time I will opt to skip it completely is if the person has barely any bottom lashes to begin with.

New False Eyelash Discovery – Ardell Double Up Lashes

I’m ecstatic to discover and share with everyone some amazing false eyelashes I found at the drugstore the other day.  They are Ardell’s “Double Up” version which features various styles to choose from.  I ended up picking up a pair of the #202, #203, and #204.

[Beauty Confession] - The only false eyelashes I wear are MAC #48.  On rare occasions, I will opt for MAC’s #6 lash but 95% of the time, I stay loyal to my MAC #48.  I just have not found anything that compares to these lashes which is why I strictly wear them, but now that I discovered these Ardell Double Up lashes, there’s a good chance I’ll be converting to these.

What I like most about these eyelashes are they are super full and very long.  With false eyelashes (for myself), I have always found the expression, “go big or go home” apply very much so.  I will feature a makeup post wearing a pair of these!

[Makeup Trend Focus] – Bronzy Eyeshadows with Watermelon Pink Lips

Posted in BLUSH, EYE MAKEUP, LIPGLOSSES, LIPS, LIPS - LIPSTICKS, MAC MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP, MAKEUP TREND FOCUS on June 26, 2012 by stylebymeli

Here is a summer inspired daytime look with bronzy eye shadows in shimmery textures and gold accents with a pop of color on the lips.

-  Typically, I like my daytime eye makeup to start with a super light lid and softly blend a neutral tone with a darker the outer crease for extra definition.  I decided for this look to start with a slightly more darker lid color in the bronzy tones and keep the colors within the same color family.  This creates a softer blend with less contrast, but it still captures a nice visual effect.

-  In terms of the cheek color, I applied it very softly and in a pinkish color with a coral undertone.  I always gravitate towards pink and coral blushes in a matte texture for the cheeks.  Again, my face needs that added brightness!

-  For the lips, I wanted something glossy and hot pink.  It came out bright (but not too overly dramatic) and sort of looks like a watermelon type shade.  I’m wearing MAC’s “Viva Glam Nicki” lipstick with MAC’s “On a Holiday” plushglass (this lipgloss was a limited shade that came out a couple months ago).

[Beauty Confession] - By default, I’m obsessed with lip colors and always have been.  For me, a great lip color is equivalent to a great style accessory, so depending on what I’m wearing, this will greatly impact my lip color selection.  I also tend to stick with brights, especially in the summer, because I need color to contrast my fair skin.

A Look Inside My Makeup Kit – What Products I Use and What’s Most Essential

Here is a photo I took of my kit after setting it up from this past weekend. As you can see, I’m set and ready to go!

So I realize it may seem that I have taken an extended leave of absence from my blog and I’m going to try to make up for it as much as I can from now until the end of the month!  I thought it would be nice to share some information regarding my professional makeup kit and what I stock it with.

Skincare - I always like to emphasize that skincare is a necessity as it will make or break the foundation application.  I keep a handful of moisturizers depending on a person’s skin type (normal, dry, oily) including tinted moisturizers from MAC and Korres.  I also have a full range of foundation primers and not loyal to any brand in particular.  Other good skincare products to have are eye creams to decrease puffiness underneath and for brightening.

Face - In terms of foundations, I currently carry MAC and Face Atelier.  I carry every shade that MAC offers so I’m not left having to mix shades (unless of course I can’t find a true match).

With powders, I carry all of MAC’s mineralize skinfinishes.  I also carry some of MAC’s studio careblend powders which I’m also a huge fan of and in time would like to get every shade.  I also have blot powders, both pressed and loose.

With concealers and color correctors, I have MAC, Bobbi Brown, Cinema Secrets, and Shiseido.

With blushes, I mainly carry MAC blush palettes, but also have some loose ones from NARS and MAC’s mineralize blushes.

With bronzers and highlighters, I’m using MAC and NARS mainly.

Eyes - In terms of eye shadows, I ONLY carry MAC as they offer an extensive color range with different textures and beautiful pigmentation.  I have over 150 colors in my kit!

With eyeliners, I carry liquid, gel, and pencils from MAC and Korres.

With eyeshadow bases, I only carry MAC’s paint pots.  I’ve tried many others including Urban Decay’s primer potient, but still find myself incredibly faithful to MAC.

With brow products, I mainly use eye shadows to fill in the brows but also carry brow powder kits from Urban Decay and Anastasia, which are truly great.

With mascara, I don’t have any brand loyalty.  Currently, I am carrying Clinique, Mabelline, and MAC.

With false eyelashes, I’m actually a fan of Revlon, Kiss, and Salon Perfect’s demi wisps are fabulous!

Lips - I carry a ton of lip liners which I like to use for coloring the lip for staying power along with double-ended long-wearing lip products such as MAC’s Pro Longwear (I’ve been obsessed with these for myself for years), but also finding other brands that carry similiar products such as Lorac and Covergirl.  I also have a handful of MAC lipsticks and lip palettes.

With lipglosses, I carry pretty much any brand.  I’m not loyal to one specific brand because to me, a lipgloss is a lipgloss.  Plus, I just like keeping a variety for my clients to choose from.

Besides makeup, what’s most essential in one’s makeup kit are the tools. It’s really important to find the best brushes and ones you feel most comfortable with. Personally, I absolutely cannot blend eyeshadows without a MAC #217 (seriously!), so it is for this reason that I carry a few of these in my brush belt.
