My Life in Photos this October – Madonna Concert, The Great Pumpkin Carve, and Halloween Party

Posted in EVENTS, FASHION, MADONNA, MAKE-UP, TRAVEL on October 30, 2012 by stylebymeli

Hi everyone, another month is quickly coming to an end and I’m just catching up on my blog now!  For starters, hope everyone on the east coast is safe and sound…thank you everyone who has reached out to me.  I am thankfully okay and have not faced any hardships (I still have power which gives me an opportunity to catch up on my blog now)!  My prayers go out to those who are in need.

This month I was away for about a week in Arizona to visit my fabulous aunt to see Madonna in Phoenix for her MDNA Tour.  It was my third time seeing Madonna in concert and boy does she know how to put on a show!  I admire her greatly and will continue to support her!

With my aunt before the Madonna concert. I decided to wear all black, specifically a black sequin crop top for a little bling. I’m wearing purple lipstick…MAC Violetta, love it for the fall and especially for big events!

I love this image of Madonna. Anyone who says she still doesn’t have it going on may need their eyes examined! Seriously, watching her show made me think that there is NO EXCUSE for anyone (especially someone my age) to not be in shape…she’s got over 20 years on me and still looks HOT.  Can we say #fitnessinspiration ?!

The many looks of Madonna throughout her MDNA Tour.

This past weekend, my wonderful boyfriend took me to a Pumpkin Carve event in Pennsylvania.  It was amazing to see all the artistic pumpkin carvings contributed throughout the community!

I really appreciate art in all forms. This is amazing, I love talent when I see it!

One of my favorite pumpkin creations was this snowman pumpkin.

Pretty, pretty pumpkins everywhere!

I also went to a Halloween party over the weekend before the hurricane hit New Jersey!  Last year at this time of year we were faced with a tremendous amount of snow which prevented me to celebrate Halloween this year but I made up for it this year!

I kept the makeup festive with red lipstick and double stacked lashes, one pair had red feathers on the end (purchased at Claire’s) which added a nice stylish touch.  I could have gone crazier with the makeup and make it more theatrical but at the end of the day, I want to look beautiful so it’s still more of a beauty look rather than too avant garde.  Plus the headpiece is more of the focal point so I didn’t want the makeup to be too conflicting and ostentatious.

In case you are wondering, I’m dressed up as the Queen of Hearts. I literally put together this costume the day before and in less than an hour before the party. This was the FIRST year I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to be!  (FYI, I typically know a year in advance what I want to dress up as, so this was a very last minute decision on my part).  I created the headpiece myself. I took a devils horn headband…ripped off one of the horns and left the other horn as a back holder for the cards. Using a glue gun, I glued the four queen cards together and then to the back of the horn.  I guess queens typically wear crowns, but I wanted to emphasize I was the Queen of Hearts, not just any old queen! ;)

With my favorite pinup girl Jenn, who hosted an amazing Halloween Party! :)

[Hope everyone had a great month!  Any cool costumes this year?]

Yay…Got Accepted to Harper’s Bazaar Style Ambassador Program

Posted in EVENTS, FASHION, MAGAZINE, STYLE BY MELI UPDATES on October 9, 2012 by stylebymeli

Although I subscribe to a ton of magazines (too many to keep up with on a monthly basis..it’s bad enough I can’t keep up with my blog these days let along sitting back and getting lost in a magazine), my all time favorite fashion publication has ALWAYS been Harper’s Bazaar.  As an artist, I’m a visual creature by nature so besides the brilliant content and extraordinary images, I’m in complete awe of the creativity that goes behind the layout of their magazine.  I know that may sound absolutely absurd but seriously, at the end of the day, they need to capture my visual interest!

I can’t even remember how long ago, but I had applied to be in their Style Ambassador’s program (I had to submit some photos of myself, general info, and a link to my blog) and pleasantly found this email in my inbox a few days ago welcoming me to the program:

I will be finding out more information in about a week regarding upcoming assignments and hopefully get invited to some uber-chic events along the way.  If anyone is reading this that also got accepted to the program, please connect with me via Facebook or Twitter.  I could always use a new stylish friend or two!  ;)

[Outfit Post] with Teal Cocktail Dress and Gold Accessories…An Evening Out Look

Posted in DRESSES, EVENTS, FASHION, JEWELRY, OUTFIT POST, SHOES with tags , , , on April 27, 2012 by stylebymeli

I wore this outfit last night for a special event that required semi-formal attire. I will be posting the makeup behind this look in my next blog. Enjoy!

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a teal dress from Macy’s.  I honestly don’t know the brand but I did pick this up from the junior’s section.  I purchased this a couple years ago and have only worn it one other time.  I love the deep teal color!

I’m wearing gold accessories from varying places.  The necklace is from NY&Co (who would have thought?).  I never shop there but randomly had been shopping there for a friend and came across this chain necklace.  I’m also wearing a cocktail ring from Macy’s and bracelets from Forever 21.

The black peep toe heels are Gucci.  I have definitely worn these in previous outfit posts.  They are so versatile that they definitely get a lot of fashion mileage!

[Where to wear this outfit]:  This is definitely an evening look and something I would wear for special events only.  I suppose you can go to a fancy lounge or restaurant in this look as well.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  I think the first time I wore this dress, I styled it with silver accessories.  I wanted to style it differently, so switching up the accessories will definitely change up the look.   I usually tend to wear a dress one time and never wear it again, but if I know I can find other ways to wear it differently the next time, I will hold onto it for another occasion.

Styling Tip:  With solid colored dresses, I think it’s great to really play up your accessories.  As you can see, I’m wearing a necklace, cocktail ring, AND two bracelets that I stacked together.  I believe accessories can truly make or break the final look, so definitely choose wisely and style accordingly!

-  I think jewel tones are always a nice alternative to black and never go out of fashion.  I myself tend to wear a ton of black but wearing color is so much more refreshing!

Thurin Atelier Luxury Bridal Design House Grand Opening Event Over the Weekend

Posted in BRIDAL FASHION, DRESSES, EVENTS, FASHION, WEDDING DRESSES on March 19, 2012 by stylebymeli

If I take a few days to blog, chances are I’ve just been exceptionally busy and this weekend was no exception.  Besides attending a wedding that was held on St. Patrick’s Day, I wanted to share with everyone an amazing event I attended this past Friday.

Jean-Ralph Thurin is a fashion designer with a specialization in custom designed wedding gowns and evening formalwear.  I attended his grand opening which was held in his salon in Somerville, NJ.  His attention to detail and style is not only exquisite, but all his designs are truly unique and capture a modern elegance.

This was one of my absolute favorite designs that I saw that evening. What I like about it is that it's not your traditional wedding gown and unlike anything I have ever seen before. I'm obsessed with the beading and embellished top which adds a glamourous touch and then the bottom is a really nice styling detail. This is beautiful!

Another truly one-of-a-kind design. This is more classy but still very high fashion.

This was taken before I left the event. I had such a wonderful time!

[Outfit Post] with Lace Sequin One Shoulder Dress and Black Peep Toe Heels…An Evening Wedding Attire Look

Posted in DRESSES, EVENTS, FASHION, OUTFIT POST, SHOES with tags , , , , on February 26, 2012 by stylebymeli

I greatly apologize that I have been missing from my blog for the past few days and for the entire weekend.  (Although something tells me you will all forgive me ;)!)  I’m finally catching up now with a special [Outfit Post] featuring what I wore to a wedding!

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a cocktail dress from Macy’s that I discovered on Friday.  I had initially planned on wearing a different dress for the wedding, but when I found this, I knew it was perfect for the one I was going to this weekend!

In terms of my accessories, I am wearing a beaded bracelet from Arden B, cocktail ring by Lia Sophia, and vintage rhinestone clip-on earrings (I think they were originally my mother’s!).  I chose to skip a necklace due to the fact  I was already wearing plenty of other accessories and the one shoulder strap already adds style to the neckline area.

The shoes are by Nina Shoes which I had purchased from Macy’s a few years ago.  I probably have only worn them a few times but they are the perfect dress shoe for a fancy event!  They are black peep toe with a rhinestone embellishment in the middle.  They are so classy, elegant, and beautiful.  Even though they don’t get much wear, I’ll own these forever because they really complete the look and never go out of style.

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I wore this to an evening wedding.  I even got my nails done (a french gel manicure, I LOVE french manicures, so simple, yet so beautiful) and my hair styled.  I wanted some volume with soft waves.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  When choosing a look for a wedding, I think it’s really important to dress season appropriate and also take into consideration the style of the wedding (or of the couple).  Although my style is naturally dressy and fancy, I won’t always go to places such as a wedding dressed this way.  I knew that the wedding was going to be very fancy and the bride also happens to have similar taste to mine, so I knew I would be okay with wearing this dress.  Also, being that it’s still winter, I thought the light grey/silver color was absolutely PERFECT.  Although you can probably wear the dress any time of year, I definitely don’t think it would be as stylishly effective to pull this off at a summer wedding.  (That’s just my personal styling opinion).

-  Although the dress appears to be a one shoulder, the dress actually initially had a thin strap on the other side.  I chose to cut it off completely because for one, it was too long where it would be constantly falling off my shoulder unless I hand sewed it to shorten it (straps are always too long on me as I have such narrow shoulders!!).  And two, I just didn’t think it was necessary.  The style of the dress is enhanced by wearing it as a one shoulder.  (I did have to hand sew the one shoulder strap and shorten it myself, took me not even five minutes.  That was the only other alternation I made besides cutting the thin strap off the dress)!

-  I really love all the other styling details of this dress.  I love anything lace and with sequins, but the actual style of the dress is also true to my aesthetic.  It’s a great length (surprising as I always have to get things hemmed!), love the one shoulder (which I did alter myself), and the ruching down the center on both the front and back also adds a nice touch.

-  Initially, I wasn’t in love with the color of the dress because I don’t tend to wear a lot of light colors (not enough contrast against my fair skin) and especially in the cool color family, but sometimes you need to step out of your styling comfort zone.  I have no problem taking fashionable risks because sometimes you find you end up loving something you may not have ever seen yourself wearing!

Styling Confession:  I’m the type of person that will wear a dress to an event and then never wear the dress again (unless it’s black or something very classic).  I just don’t like to repeat fashion.  I feel every special event calls for a new and unique look.  So most of the dresses I wear, I end up selling it or bringing it to a consignment store once its been worn.  However, I really do love this dress and it will definitely stay in my closet for upcoming events.  I would just find a way to style it differently.

Here is a closer look, it's a pale light grey lace dress with silver sequins and ruching down the middle in the front and back.

I love the overall styling of this look with the accessories, hair, and makeup.
