[Fabulous Fitness Post] – Are you putting the “WORK” in workout?

Posted in FABULOUS FITNESS POST, FITNESS, HEALTH with tags , on March 29, 2012 by stylebymeli

As bikini weather is approaching, you may have just started going to the gym again or been watching what you eat which are both fabulous lifestyle choices.  However, I want to put an emphasis on the working out aspect for achieving those fitness goals because they are within your reach, depending how hard you are willing to WORK for it!

What are you waiting for? Are you ready to WORK?

Remember, there is a reason why the word “WORK” is in workout.  For me, a good WORKout is where I’m not only breaking a sweat but also pushing my limits.  If I did the same thing all the time, it would be too easy.  I’m not at the gym to “take it easy.”  If that’s what I’m looking to do, I can easily do that in the comfort of my own home or go to a spa to relax.

You may be asking yourself, “How do I push my limits?  How do I take my WORKouts to the next level?”  Everyone is at a different personal fitness level, so I cannot give you a direct answer, but at the very least, I can definitely motivate you and share with you what works for me.  For starters, you will absolutely NEED to make a CONSCIOUS choice to push your limits and this will require strong efforts on your part.

A good start is to really focus on what your personal fitness/health goals are.  If nothing comes to mind, then maybe this is not the article for you (and there’s nothing wrong with that…this after all is a fashion/beauty blog with some health/fitness blogs thrown into the mix, so if you prefer to stick with those areas of interest, I won’t hold it against you ;))…Back to goals:  I am a firm believer in goal setting in all aspects of life and health/fitness is no different.  You will need to set specific goals.  Going to the gym and losing weight are NOT concrete goals.  Everyone’s goals are very personal, so I am not going to write goals for you.  This is where you need to ask yourself what you are ultimately looking to achieve along with attaching a deadline (or else you may never reach it).

Things I Do to Push Myself

-  For one, I find time to work out everyday.  Even if it’s as little as 10 minutes.  ”Not having enough time” in the day is not a legit excuse because if it’s truly that important, you will somehow make the time and incorporate it into your lifestyle.  I’m not saying you have to work out everyday, a lot of health professionals actually recommend taking a day (or two) off a week.  Personally, I listen to my body.  If I wake up feeling like my body needs to day a off, I have no problem taking a day off.  However, most of the time, my body is full of energy and actually craves a good workout.  I guess not everyone is built this way, but it is never too late to start making conscious choices to make fitness a part of your daily regime.  My point is, there will need to be some consistency with how often you work out.  Working out four days in a row and then skipping the gym for three weeks is just not going to cut it.  If this is the case, then you are not in the right state of mind where you are willing to WORK.  When you’re ready to work again, then we can talk ;)…

-  I truly strive to switch up my workouts everyday.  As I’m driving to the gym, I try to mentally prepare the different moves I’m going to do that day, but sometimes I just go in spontaneously and figure it out when I get there.  With my personal workout routines, no workout is exactly the same.

-  On cardio machines:  I do NOT stick to one type of cardio!  You got to switch it up!  Starting in the new year, I have incorporated jumping rope and tackling the Stair Master.  I used to HATE the Stair Master.  Why?  Because it’s totally kicks my —!  In other words, it’s incredibly physically challenging and often times I find myself breathing heavily and swimming in a pool of sweat by the end.  (It may not be the most enjoyable activity in the world, but hey, at least at the end of the day, I have something to show for it ;).  Prior to the new year, I only stepped foot on a Stair Master maybe twice in my entire lifetime.  Now, I try to do it at least twice a week, never on consecutive days.  I also love the cardio rowing machine and the treadmill.  Actually, in all honestly, I’d prefer to run outside any day but with a treadmill, I can really push myself to run a lot harder than I ever would outside because I can manipulate the speed and inclines.  As much as I love running, I really dread the treadmill sometimes, but I do it for discipline.

*  Also, on cardio machines, besides varying the speed and inclines, try to switch up the type of workout settings.  Many cardio machines have different settings such as: “fat burning,” “interval training,” “manual,” etc.  It’s really good to change these each time you use it.  This way, you’re keeping your body guessing at all times.  (You don’t want it to ever get too comfortable or else you will hit a plateau).

-  With free weights (or weight machines):  In order to continue building strength, I gradually increase the weights.  I try to increase the weights after a full two weeks because by then, I feel like my body has adapted and it’s ready for the next challenge.  Sometimes I increase the weights and find I can barely complete any reps.  I am okay with this because I know in time, I will eventually be able to complete more reps.  Generally, I try to complete 10 reps in a set.  (If I can do more than that with ease, then I know I’m not working my body to its full potential).  When lifting weights, really try to concentrate on good form (this can be a challenge, also for myself at times…but again, CHALLENGE is a good thing ;)), even if you cannot complete as many reps.  Keep in mind, quality over quantity!

[A Final Note:  Often times, people ask me how I stay so motivated.  Honestly, it comes from within.  It also comes with the mindset and quote by Lucille Ball: "Love yourself first and everything else falls into line."  I actually have always said this, but recently discovered an actual quote that states what I've always said.  Remember, if you TRULY love yourself, you are naturally only going to want to do what's best for you.]

5 Skin Boosting Tips that Dramatically Improved My Skin

Posted in FACE, FACE CLEANSER, PRODUCTS I LOVE, SHOPPING, SKINCARE with tags , , , , , on March 26, 2012 by stylebymeli

I’ve recently gotten compliments on my skin and happy that it has really cleared up a lot since the new year.  The results have come from a few lifestyle changes which I’m going to share with you here.

1 – Daily face masks (about twice a week)

I do own a few face masks but never really got into the habit of using them until recently.  I honestly try to do them at least twice a week.  I currently have been using Murad’s Clarifying Mask and also a huge fan of The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Mask.  My main skin concern has been daily breakouts and these masks seem to have boosted the clarity and overall smoothness of my skin.

2-  Massage face with oil based cleanser as a pre-wash (every time I cleanse my face in the shower)

Okay, my real secret to glorious skin (in terms of the supple and firmness) is oil based face products.  I’m obsessed.  I truly believe oil is the key to keeping the skin smooth, youthful, dewey, and extra radiant.  Pretty much skin perfection.  What I have been doing now every day (at least once a day, before I hop in the shower).  I massage my face (dry, not wet at all) with an oil face cleanser for a couple minutes.  I then like to let the oil penetrate into my skin for extra hydration.  Then I will go ahead and rinse it off with a regular non-oil based cleanser with my Clarisonic.  The two oil cleansers I use are Josie Maran’s Argan Oil Cleanser and Origin’s Clean Energy Cleansing Oil.  I love them both very much.

3-  I invested in a Clarisonic Mia (I use at least once a day)

Back in December, I decided to buy the Clarisonic Mia and initially I was skeptical if it was really improving my skin or not.  Months have gone by and I do notice my skin looks much smoother so I have to give credit to where credit is due.  Although the Clarisonic feels a little abrasive (which is why I only limit myself to washing my face with it once a day), I do feel that it does deep clean the skin much more effectively than I would when using my hands to wash my face.

4- Consistent and simple skincare routine (everyday)

I own a ton of skincare products.  I haven’t counted but I probably have at least ten different face washes including face scrubs in my shower (as I told you, I’m overly obsessed with skincare).  However, the skin needs to follow a consistent routine in order to get the best results.

My new everday face wash. I have been using this for the past month and it's amazing!

Recently, I purchased Peter Thomas Roth’s Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel as it was recommended by an actual representative of the line from Sephora.  I went there specifically looking for a glycolic face cleanser which is supposed to help clear acne.  My heart was set on buying the Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid Face Wash 3% but the PTR representative talked me out of it and said it would be much too harsh to use on my skin being that my skin wasn’t that much broken out to begin with.

She recommended the anti-aging cleanser as my everyday cleanser because it’s much more gentle, great to use with the Clarisonic, and also has acne fighting ingredients, both glycolic acid and salicyclic acid but at much lower amounts.  Now I pretty much have been using this cleanser everyday in the shower and I think this has definitely helped improve my skin tremendously!  I felt a difference the very first time I used it and a little bit goes a long way.

5-  Organic fruits and vegetables along with green smoothies (everyday!!!)

I truly believe that you are what you eat.  If you nourish the body with natural foods, I believe your skin will glow from the inside out.  Fruits and vegetables are main staples to my diet but it wasn’t until about a month ago that I decided to go totally organic (I used to only invest in certain things organic but not everything).  I had been reading a lot of articles regarding the over usage of pesticides in fruits/vegetables which contaminates them.  This definitely causes havoc in the body  and I believe this correlates with breakouts to some degree.  Not only does organic food taste better, but I swear, ever since I made the switch, I’ve really noticed a difference in my skin!  My grocery expenses have gone up since organic foods are usually a little pricier but in the long run, it’s completely worth it!  When it comes to food, you have to invest in the good stuff!

[Outfit Post] with Embellished Deep Purple Mini Dress and Peep Toe Studded Heels…A Simple and Sophisticated Look

Posted in DRESSES, FASHION, OUTFIT POST, SHOES with tags , on March 24, 2012 by stylebymeli

This is a look that I actually wore towards the beginning of the week.  It’s pretty simple being there are no layers involved but still stylish and sophisticated.

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a deep greyish purple dress with embellishments from Forever 21.  It’s funny because when I spotted this dress when I purchased it (maybe a year or two ago), I was surprised at its high quality and style.  This is a dress that I see myself owning for quite awhile because the style is classic and I really like the fit.

The shoes are Gucci.  These are the beautiful peep toe heels with the gold studded heels that I got during the holidays.  Ah, they are so amazing.

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I wore this when meeting up with new clients.  It was also another beautiful day and called for a chic little dress.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  When it comes to great style, it doesn’t always matter where you shop.  By that I mean, I truly like to mix things up and not all my things have to be high end and designer.  Yes, I know the shoes are designer but the dress is from Forever 21.  You do not have to spend a fortune to have high style!  I’m actually amazed when I come across someone with impeccable style and they tell me, “Oh, you’ll never believe it but my outfit is from Target.”  That actually really impresses me because not everyone could pull that off so effortlessly.

-  Being that the neckline of the dress has embellishment details, I feel that there is not really a need for much accessorizing.  To keep it simple, I chose to just wear a gold beaded bracelet and gold ring.

-  It’s good to buy dresses that have a little stretch to the material as they are not only flattering but also comfortable.  I also like the fact I can pretty much just throw this own and walk out the door.

Styling Confession:  Personally, I like most of my clothing to fit very tight on the body to accentuate the natural curves.  I feel most comfortable this way, given that it’s not tight to the point of discomfort of course.  I think because I maintain a fairly tight physique (besides fashion, I’m also a health/fitness fanatic), I expect my clothes to also fit in this way.

Project Runway All Stars, Episode 12 Runway Review – The Finale

Posted in FASHION, PROJECT RUNWAY, PROJECT RUNWAY ALL STARS on March 23, 2012 by stylebymeli

The moment we had all been patiently waiting for aired on Thursday when we were presented with the final three designers’ runway collections showcased at Fashion Week.  This was the first season in Project Runway history that I was incredibly proud of the final three designers remaining.  I said from day 1 that the final 3 would be male designers (not due to gender, just based on the fact that the males that were chosen for PRAStars were much stronger than the females chosen for the show).

The Challenge:  Design a runway collection in 4 days

Guest Judges:  Tommy Hilfiger  (fashion designer), Ken Downing (SVP of Neiman Marcus)

My Runway Review:

1-  Austin – “Austin Scarlett” :  Very cohesive, great color story, so unique, the white gown was beautiful, very avante garde, I got chills at the end

[This collection was very strong and there were clear fashion statements made in all his designs.  I like that he's creative and always true to his design aesthetic.  He's not afraid to be Austin Scarlett which is why the title of his collection suits it so well].

2-  Mondo – “Therapy” :  Very dramatic, love the graphic designs, very cohesive, so artistic, the Rorschach inspired dress (seen below) is SO HOT

[Although his collection wasn't my favorite, I valued its fresh creativity and the innovation put into his work.  I liked the central theme of "Therapy" and how it correlated so well with his designs].

3-  Michael – “Serengeti” :  Comfortable, feminine chic, great silhouettes, great prints, sophisticated sex appeal, balanced

[Overall, somewhat disappointed with his collection.  Yes, the clothing were beautiful and completely "divine" as Georgina stated, but the extra wow factor that is usually present in his work seemed to be lacking.  I wish he was more true to himself and stepped up his creativity to a much higher capacity which I know he is capable of.  My biggest issue with his collection was that there was nothing memorable.  Nothing stood out in my opinion].

My Final Thoughts:

Congrats to Mondo for winning Project Runway All Stars! This was my favorite design from his collection. The model looks like she is wearing a piece artwork down the runway. The design is executed and styled perfectly!

-  All the designers presented amazing collections and to think that they created an entire collection within four days is just mind-blowing.  If I had to choose only one favorite, I would actually have to go with Austin Scarlett (although I’ve always favored Michael and Mondo’s work more consistently).  I was very attracted to all the drama in Austin’s designs.

Although I’m a huge Michael Costello fan, I’m very happy with the outcome of the show and see Mondo declared the winner because I felt he truly should have won Season 8 of Project Runway.

First Day of Spring 2012 – Flowers in the Air Floral Remix Inspiration

Posted in DRESSES, FASHION, SHOES, STYLE COLLAGES, STYLE INSPIRATION BOARD on March 20, 2012 by stylebymeli

Today was the first official day of spring 2012 and I don’t know about you, but I’m incredibly captivated by florals this season.  Best of all, they are blooming in various ways:  black and white for a classic chic contrast, bursts of red if you’re feeling hot and flashy, delicate blushes for a soft feminine touch, and bright floral prints are always vibrantly fresh.

I also couldn’t help but add the solid blush pink peplum dress (hey, you know I’m all about contrasts and that I needed something solid to contrast the florals in some way)!  This dress is such a unique take on this trend with the ruffles cascading down the side.  If you haven’t noticed, peplums are just as ubiquitous as florals this season.  Fashionably, I’m left breathless.

[How are you wearing florals this season?]
