[Makeup Trend Focus] – Daytime Blue Eye Makeup Look

Posted in MAKE-UP, MAC MAKE-UP, EYE MAKEUP, BLUSH, EYELINER, MAKEUP TREND FOCUS on February 29, 2012 by stylebymeli

Last week, I decided that I was going to create a daytime look that incorporated blue eye makeup.  In all honesty, I don’t like to wear a lot of color on the eyes and probably wear blue about once a year.  So it was time to change that!  For many, I think blue is one of the hardest colors to play with on the eyes because it’s just tricky finding the right shades of blue that will accentuate the eyes.

My absolute favorite shade of blue to use on the eyes is indigo because it’s a blue with a hint of violet.  I also like cobalt blue which is a much brighter variation of blue and sometimes play with a light shimmery powder blue if I’m going for a wintery snow princess sort of look (which is not often or ever for that matter)!  Personally, I stay far away from navy.  For whatever reason, I just don’t feel it compliments my coloring.

[Beauty Confession] - Back when I was in college (prior to pursuing makeup artistry), one of my first MAC eye shadows was, “Flashtrack,” which was a dark navy blue with slight shimmer.  I would wear it randomly and never understood why I felt like I looked sick when I wore it.  (Really, I remember having those thoughts but never pinpointed it to the eye shadow initially).  I grew to realize that it’s not the most flattering color in the world on me and if I was going to make it work, it required a lot of work in terms of what other colors I would have to blend it with.  So it’s definitely not a color I could just throw on effortlessly!  I ended up giving the eye shadow to my mother years later and it ironically turned out to be one of her makeup staples!  (Who would have thought?)

How to wear this trend:

-  As I have mentioned in previous blogs or that you will quickly grow to learn, I am all about a strong bottom eye liner.  I actually really love using colored liners on the bottom because they truly bring out the eyes more than a colored eye shadow (since the liner is CLOSEST to the actual eye).  I chose an indigo blue and heavily lined the bottom and then still rimmed a touch of black pencil liner to add more depth.  The top liner remained a shark liquid black.  (FYI, I wear liquid black liner on top every day!)

-  Being that blue is such a cool color, I really wanted to keep the rest of the makeup in the warm color family.  Naturally, the warm colors just compliment my skin tone best, so I warmed up the cheeks with a coral blush.  In terms of lip color, I really pondered on my options, but ultimately ended up with a mid-tone pink with a little brightness so it would pop.  I was also thinking about coral (to contrast the blue) but since I already had coral on the cheeks, I didn’t want the lips to match.  I also initially played with nudes and even tried pairing with a taupe lip, but the pink still looked the best in my personal opinion.

-  I chose to keep the lid color fairly neutral, specifically a champagne color with a light shimmer.  I added an indigo matte color in the outer corners of the eyes and blended it very softly since this was a daytime look.  If I was going for an evening look, I would have probably tried wearing the blue as the lid color, to prep for a smokey eye effect.

I incorporated blue in the bottom eye liner and on the outer edges of the eyes. Even though I'm not a blue person (in terms of eye makeup), I honestly was really happy with the outcome. I actually was really sad to have to remove the makeup at the end of the night, that's how much I liked it! That's why it's always good to be experimental and that's what I'm all about!

[Does anyone wear blue eye makeup regularly, if so, how do you like to wear it?]

2012 Oscars Best Dressed List – Who’s Style Captured My Eye and My Top 3 Favorites Revealed

Posted in AWARD SHOWS, CELEBRITY FASHION, CELEBRITY MAKEUP, DRESSES, FASHION, MAKE-UP with tags , , , , , , , on February 28, 2012 by stylebymeli

The 84th Annual Academy Awards was held in Los Angeles this past Sunday and although I was not home to physically watch it live (and we all know I couldn’t care less, I just want to see what everyone is wearing!), I did get a chance to fashion scope the big night to see who really shined, leaving the best stylish impressions of the evening.

[FYI: In case you are wondering how I make my decisions, I'm not just judging on the dress itself, but also the actual FIT of the dress and other styling elements that complete the final look (hair, makeup, etc).  I cannot stress enough that a dress could be exceptionally beautiful, but if it does not flatter the client, it won't make my best dressed list!  At the end of the day, I'm all about visual aesthetics!]

Stacy Keibler in Marchesa - This was by far the most STUNNING look of the evening. The silhouette is not only unique but exquisitely beautiful to look at. The draping and proportions are simply perfect. I also love the metallic gold fabric, it looks like liquid gold spun onto her body. Seriously, this is breathtaking! I like her soft makeup and hair to the side. The earrings and clutch add a nice stylish touch to complete the look.

Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad - This dress is not only glamourous but also very intriguing. There are a lot of styling elements going on at one time but they all compliment each other so nicely. I love how this dress is tasteful and still incredibly sexy. I love anything with cut-outs at the shoulders and the vertical stripes are hypnotizing. Jennifer Lopez can do no wrong in my book! She always gets it right and knows how to accentuate her curves in all the right places.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace - Isn't it amazing how something as simple as a little black dress can still manage to make such a high styling impact? Let me tell you why this works. For one, there is a high contrast between the black against her super fair skin. Then the dramatically high slit exposing her leg and the draping effect against the neckline contrasted against her small waist. There are a lot of visual contrasts and this is what makes this eye catching and remarkably stylish. Her bold red lips also make a statement and ultimately complete the final look.

[Who do you think dressed the best for the Oscars this year?  (Am I forgetting anyone)?]

[Outfit Post] with Lace Sequin One Shoulder Dress and Black Peep Toe Heels…An Evening Wedding Attire Look

Posted in DRESSES, EVENTS, FASHION, OUTFIT POST, SHOES with tags , , , , on February 26, 2012 by stylebymeli

I greatly apologize that I have been missing from my blog for the past few days and for the entire weekend.  (Although something tells me you will all forgive me ;)!)  I’m finally catching up now with a special [Outfit Post] featuring what I wore to a wedding!

About This Outfit:

[The Outfit]:  I am wearing a cocktail dress from Macy’s that I discovered on Friday.  I had initially planned on wearing a different dress for the wedding, but when I found this, I knew it was perfect for the one I was going to this weekend!

In terms of my accessories, I am wearing a beaded bracelet from Arden B, cocktail ring by Lia Sophia, and vintage rhinestone clip-on earrings (I think they were originally my mother’s!).  I chose to skip a necklace due to the fact  I was already wearing plenty of other accessories and the one shoulder strap already adds style to the neckline area.

The shoes are by Nina Shoes which I had purchased from Macy’s a few years ago.  I probably have only worn them a few times but they are the perfect dress shoe for a fancy event!  They are black peep toe with a rhinestone embellishment in the middle.  They are so classy, elegant, and beautiful.  Even though they don’t get much wear, I’ll own these forever because they really complete the look and never go out of style.

[Where to wear this outfit]:  I wore this to an evening wedding.  I even got my nails done (a french gel manicure, I LOVE french manicures, so simple, yet so beautiful) and my hair styled.  I wanted some volume with soft waves.

[Stylish Notes]:

-  When choosing a look for a wedding, I think it’s really important to dress season appropriate and also take into consideration the style of the wedding (or of the couple).  Although my style is naturally dressy and fancy, I won’t always go to places such as a wedding dressed this way.  I knew that the wedding was going to be very fancy and the bride also happens to have similar taste to mine, so I knew I would be okay with wearing this dress.  Also, being that it’s still winter, I thought the light grey/silver color was absolutely PERFECT.  Although you can probably wear the dress any time of year, I definitely don’t think it would be as stylishly effective to pull this off at a summer wedding.  (That’s just my personal styling opinion).

-  Although the dress appears to be a one shoulder, the dress actually initially had a thin strap on the other side.  I chose to cut it off completely because for one, it was too long where it would be constantly falling off my shoulder unless I hand sewed it to shorten it (straps are always too long on me as I have such narrow shoulders!!).  And two, I just didn’t think it was necessary.  The style of the dress is enhanced by wearing it as a one shoulder.  (I did have to hand sew the one shoulder strap and shorten it myself, took me not even five minutes.  That was the only other alternation I made besides cutting the thin strap off the dress)!

-  I really love all the other styling details of this dress.  I love anything lace and with sequins, but the actual style of the dress is also true to my aesthetic.  It’s a great length (surprising as I always have to get things hemmed!), love the one shoulder (which I did alter myself), and the ruching down the center on both the front and back also adds a nice touch.

-  Initially, I wasn’t in love with the color of the dress because I don’t tend to wear a lot of light colors (not enough contrast against my fair skin) and especially in the cool color family, but sometimes you need to step out of your styling comfort zone.  I have no problem taking fashionable risks because sometimes you find you end up loving something you may not have ever seen yourself wearing!

Styling Confession:  I’m the type of person that will wear a dress to an event and then never wear the dress again (unless it’s black or something very classic).  I just don’t like to repeat fashion.  I feel every special event calls for a new and unique look.  So most of the dresses I wear, I end up selling it or bringing it to a consignment store once its been worn.  However, I really do love this dress and it will definitely stay in my closet for upcoming events.  I would just find a way to style it differently.

Here is a closer look, it's a pale light grey lace dress with silver sequins and ruching down the middle in the front and back.

I love the overall styling of this look with the accessories, hair, and makeup.

[Thanks for viewing!  Thoughts?]

Project Runway All Stars, Episode 8 Runway Review – The Raise the Flags Challenge

Posted in FASHION, PROJECT RUNWAY, PROJECT RUNWAY ALL STARS with tags , , , on February 24, 2012 by stylebymeli

For this week’s challenge, the designers were asked to meet at the United Nations to choose a flag (they were limited to the six choices provided to them) and use it as the inspiration behind their next design.  I thought this was a creative challenge and was very happy with the overall outcome.  The designers definitely stepped it up this week!

The Challenge:  Design for a dress inspired by the colors and cultures of a flag on a $200 budget

Guest Judge:  Catherine Malandrino  (French fashion designer)

I absolutely adore Catherine Malandrino. She is one of my favorite fashion designers.

My Runway Review:  (My brief notes taken while watching each designer’s look come down the runway in the order they walked in)

1-  Jerell (India):  Definitely unique, culturally festive, and Indian inspired but I question its taste level

2-  Kenley (Chile):  Stunning, gorgeous, looks great on the model!  (Does this correlate with Chile?)

3-  Austin (Seychelles):  Too flowy, not exciting or youthful, bad choice of colors, odd color combo, strange design

4-  Mondo (Jamaica):  My first notes: “OMG SO COOL”  (lol), this girl looks so intriguing and sharp even though mainly all black, love this design, so artistic, connects with the flag, fits amazing, impeccable execution and styling, cool headpiece

5-  Mila (Papa New Guinea):  Best design I’ve ever seen by her although it’s still not the best out there, love the shoes that were styled with design, looks good on model

6-  Michael (Greece):  Execution could have been improved, pretty but design was just a little too literal (with Greek theme), too much volume, I like the blue accent

Mondo is the winner of this week's challenge

My Final Thoughts:

-  Mondo was definitely the clear winner for this week’s challenge, although I have to say that Kenley’s design was also very memorable.  My only concern with Kenley is that she is too predictable with her designs.  It’s great to have a strong sense of you who are as a designer and capture your true design aesthetic (she’s obsessed with polka dots), but after awhile it gets old and it’s just not intriguing enough to capture my interest.

-  It’s about time that Mila finally got eliminated from this competition.  I have been saying this for weeks.  I feel most of the designers also felt her work was distasteful.

-  I also didn’t value that Mila kept emphasizing that she doesn’t understand why the designers help each other out when they are all competing against each other.  This is a horrible mentality to have.  Yes, this is a competition, but at the end of the day, I feel that you should still give your honest opinions to one another and try to help each other if able to.  Goes to show, karma always catches up with you and it finally did when Mila got sent home this week!

[Fabulous Fitness Post] – 5 Fitness/Diet Questions I Got Asked at the Gym

Posted in DIET, FABULOUS FITNESS POST, FITNESS, HEALTH on February 22, 2012 by stylebymeli

I’ve promised a few people that I would be writing an upcoming [Fabulous Fitness Post], so here it is!  On Sunday morning when I was at the gym finishing up my workout, a guy randomly (someone I had never seen at my gym before) asked me some questions and I thought it would be great to share my answers with everyone.  I spend a lot of time reading about this stuff and here I’ll share what works for me!

The conversation started with him asking if I was training for something (I must have either looked extra good at the gym that day or perhaps he observed the crazy workout routine I was doing…or maybe a combo of both LOL).  I explained that I am not training for anything and I just enjoy working out to stay in shape and live a healthy lifestyle.  Then he went on to grill me a little bit longer with the following questions…

1)  So what exactly do you do to stay in shape?

I explained that I work out everyday (unless for some reason I can’t find the time or feel my body needs a break) and that I switch up my workouts every single day so my body doesn’t know what to expect.  I now mainly do circuit training with sculpting moves mixed with cardio.  For example, I may sprint for a few minutes to get the heart rate up, then do a set of push-ups on a bosu ball.  Then after that set, jumping jacks with weights (which is both cardio and sculpting) followed by squats with bicep curls.  I constantly move from one exercise to another until I finish the circuit.  Usually 5-6 strength training moves within a circuit.  I take a few minutes to rest and catch my breath, then repeat the circuit one more time.

The key is, you need to constantly be physically challenging your body.  It may kill, but the body eventually adapts and that’s how you build strength and start seeing results over time.  Think about it, if you perform the same exact workout everyday, your body is not being challenged enough and pushed to its full potential.  (Remember, your body is a machine, so don’t underestimate everything it can do!)  Also, doing the same thing every day gets to be boring (no?).  I really strive to push myself during my workouts, even if it’s for a short amount of time.  Again, it’s the QUALITY of the workout that counts more so than the actual time spent working out.  When I’m at the gym, personally…I’m there to crash and burn!  I may not be training for anything specific, but as I’ve said, I really try to train my body as any athlete would.

2)  How often do you do abs?

My response, “Not enough!”  Then I went on to explain that I try to do a little each day but a few days a week, I spend a little extra time focusing on them.  Abs are muscles like any other part of the body and don’t necessarily need to be trained hard every single day.

I didn’t start to consistently incorporate ab moves until a few months ago (crazy, I know).  I naturally have a small waist so I didn’t feel the need to really target that area.  Also in the past, I used to never really do ab moves mainly because I strongly believe that abs are more of a reflection of your diet.  I’ve never been a believer that doing hundreds of crunches a day is going to really transform your abs, but now I actually incorporate ab exercises because that and a good diet will eventually lead to long lasting results.  (Hey, it’s a work in progress and I’m getting there! ;))

3)  Do you find diet is important with achieving results?

Most definitely!  As many health professionals agree, diet will always play a more crucial role in staying healthy than working out.  (Of course if you incorporate both into you’re lifestyle, you’re golden).  I could have amazing workouts, but if I chose to not eat well, chances are I’ll gain weight over time or not see any results.  Whereas, if I eat extremely well all the time and skip workouts, I’ll still manage to look good.  I explained that for me personally, the working out is not hard because I feel my body naturally craves it, but eating well all the time can be very challenging at times.  I’m only human and have moments of weakness (and if it’s a holiday or special event, I let myself indulge!) but I would say the majority of the time, I eat exceptionally well.  I’ve always been a total health nut and as I get older, I continue to make even smarter health choices.

4)  Do you count calories?

Nope, never…for one, too much math involved.  Who honestly has the time to calculate that stuff (and is it really that accurate?)  I told him that healthy eating is not about how many calories you consume in a day, but more so the nutritional value of your food intake.  As I’ve stated in a previous post, a 100 calorie apple is NOT equivalent to one of those 100 calorie snack packs.  An apple is a real food and the body knows how to process it.  When you eat processed foods, your body can’t break down these mystery man-made ingredients and as a result, not only does it turn into fat usually, but potentially into greater health problems down the line.

5)  Do you eat carbs?

In all honesty, I don’t incorporate a lot of carbs in my diet.  I mainly eat carbs that come from fruits and vegetables and really try to keep simple carbs (bread, pasta, etc) to a minimum.  Reason being that those types of foods do not provide any real nutritional value and thankfully, I really don’t crave those foods to begin with.  The only carbs that I buy are oatmeal and cereal (must have high fiber content to keep me full and little to no sugar…ideally less than 3 grams).  As I had mentioned, I eat a very clean diet of foods in its most natural state, so I stick with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, fish, etc.  In other words, REAL foods from human nature, not the man-made stuff!

[Does anyone have other health tips they'd like to share?]
