Be the “Lady in Red” This Season – 10 Ways to Liven Up Your Wardrobe with This Power Shade

I’ve been very inspi-red to create a style collage dedicated to the color RED, as it’s popping up everywhere this season.  From red accessories to red shoes…this power shade is the color you want to be investing in your wardrobe.  Plus it’s classic and never goes out of style in my opinion!

I think for many, red is a little intimidating because it commands so much attention when you wear it.  If you’re going to wear red, it needs to be done with confidence and ideal to wear to places where you want to make a grand entrance.

Here is my list of 10 ways to incorporate RED into your current wardrobe:

-  Patterns:  I love red and white stripes and just recently purchased a Guess red and white tank top that I’ve already worn a few times within the past month.  I also like to mention red and white gingham is always a nice classic, especially for the summer!  (As seen above, the D&G gingham bag…so cute!).

-  Beauty:  Every classy lady needs a red lipstick.  Red nail polish is also another great alternative (especially if you’re too shy to wear red lipstick).

-  Jewelry:  Earrings, cuffs, necklaces, rings, etc.  This is a quick and easy way to add a pop of red to your outfit without being too dramatic.

-  Belt:  I love red belts!  It adds a subtle touch of red and completes the overall look.

-  Shorts:  I have to say that this is something I do not currently own, but it’s definitely on my summer shopping list…a great pair of red shorts.  It could be worn with neutrals, especially great paired with a black or white top.

-  Vest:  I love vests in general and find red vests to be very stylish, but very hard to find.  It’s a great piece to invest in your wardrobe because you can layer it in many ways.

-  Dress:  A solid red dress never goes out of style.  It’s just classic and feminine.  It’s also a great piece to wear year-round (of course depending on the style and fabric).

-  Shoes:  A hot pair of red shoes is a must!  Looks great with a little black dress or for dressing up a casual outfit.

-  Sunglasses:  This is definitely a modern way of wearing red and definitely for the fashion forward.

-  Bows, Ruffles, Rhinestones:  I categorized these together because these are all styling details that you can look for that give that extra feminine touch and pop of color.

My NEW Skincare Discovery: Josie Maran Argan Oil Cleanser – (Why I’m Obsessed)

Posted in BEAUTY TREATMENT, FACE CLEANSER, MAKEUP REMOVER, MELI'S FAB FINDS, PRODUCTS I LOVE, SKINCARE with tags , , , on May 26, 2011 by stylebymeli

Josie Maran Argan Oil Cleansing Oil - Rich in Vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Great as makeup remover and for super hydration.

Over the weekend, I was in Sephora examining their skincare selection when I came across Josie Maran’s Argan Cleansing Oil.  I am already a HUGE fan of Josie Maran’s Argan Oil, so when I discovered there is also a cleansing oil, I was psyched!

I often times talk about my love for oil based products for the face.  I personally believe oil based skin products penetrate into the skin better than a face cream, which leaves the skin ultra smooth and moisturized.  Which then translates into dewey and supple skin.

Besides this cleansing oil being all natural and loaded with antioxidants, it also smells ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.  It has a fresh citrus lemon scent.  I can’t get over how great it is.  Typically, I don’t expect my skincare products to have much of a scent, I just want it to nourish and improve the clarity of my skin.  So it’s an added bonus when I love the smell!

How I use the Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil:

- I first like to remove ALL my makeup with MAC’s Cleanse Off Oil (or sometimes I will use a face wipe).

- I rub a couple pumps of the cleansing oil in my hands and then massage it into my face for about 20-30 seconds.

-  Finally I rinse the oil off with water and pat dry with a clean face towel.

*  (I then go ahead with the rest of my nightly skincare which includes a toner, serum, and night balm).

*  I plan on using this ONLY at night after removing makeup, almost every day.  I may alternate and use other cleansers.

Styling Confession:  Lately, I actually find myself spending more money on my skincare products than I do on clothing (and any fashion related shoe or accessory).  I never thought that day would come, but I really value great skincare.  It’s so important to invest money in quality skincare and taking the time to take care of your skin both morning and night!  Consistency is the key to long-lasting results!

MAC – “Surf Baby” Collection Review

Posted in EYE MAKEUP, FACE, LIPGLOSSES, LIPS, LIPS - LIPSTICKS, MAC MAKE-UP, MAC MAKE-UP COLLECTIONS, MAKE-UP with tags , , , , , , on May 25, 2011 by stylebymeli

Tomorrow, May 26th, MAC launches their full summer collection, “Surf Baby,” which features a nice mix of limited summer products in bronzy shades and with subtle pops of color.  It has a 70′s beach vibe to it, which is the inspiration behind the collection.

I’ll be completely honest, this is not my favorite summer collection (FYI, one of my all-time favorite summer collections was “Moonbathe” when it came out in the white packaging).  The color story behind this collection doesn’t impress me too much and I feel the packaging doesn’t help enhance the collection either.  Putting that aside, I will tell you what product I am most interested in…

MAC "Surf Baby" Careblend Pressed Powder bronzers

For a pressed powder, I have to say I am pretty impressed with MAC’s careblend pressed powders, which is a fairly new formula that came out in various shades a few months ago.  Although I do like loose powders the majority of the time, these pressed powders get my stamp of approval in terms of the blend-ability and overall silky smooth texture.  The coverage is natural and not dry looking in any way.  So I am very curious to try out these new shades in “Lush-Light Bronze” and “Gold-Go Lightly”.

Surprisingly, the lip products from this collection don’t totally wow me either.  Then again, my lipstick and lipgloss collection is massive as it is and now I have the capability of creating my own shades using GIELLA custom blend cosmetics, so I am a little bias.

Here is a closer look at what’s coming out…(I personally like the lighter lipstick in “Naturally Eccentric” and lipglass, “Girl on Board” from the collection given the choices).

On a more exciting note, I have to say, I am looking forward to the Suntints, which are tinted lip conditioners that only come out in the summer time.

I like that they come in a squeeze tube packaging as well (as compared to the stick and pot editions that came out in previous years).  They are great to wear by itself for a sheer effect or over top a lipstick for a glossy shine.

This collection also features two sets of crushed metallic stackable pigments (which rarely ever come out in a collection).

These are loose pigment shadows that provide a high metallic shine.  I like both sets of colors, especially the pink/plum set.  However, I’ll admit–I personally do not use loose shadows or pigments all that often.  I like to stick with pressed eye shadows.

Overall, the collection has some nice surprises, but I definitely think I have seen better summer collections in the past.

Attention Brides: Custom Made Makeup Available for Your Special Day! (Thanks to GIELLA custom blend cosmetics)!

I have shared with everyone that I now create my own makeup using GIELLA custom blend cosmetics, an exclusive luxury cosmetic line that allows for any color personally designed just for you!  (I still cannot get over how amazing the concept is behind all this)!  If you’re still not convinced, I also want to mention that Kim Kardashian uses GIELLA custom blend cosmetics!  Her makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic has also created a special sheer highlighting powder for GIELLA called, “EYE M GLAM.”

Over the weekend, I created a lipstick and lipgloss for one of my brides that we used on the day of the wedding and she absolutely loved it!  Days before the wedding, she wrote me an e-mail describing exactly the type of color she was looking for, which allowed for me to design the perfect lip products for her!  She specifically wrote, “And, definitely a plum – mauve lipstick (more purple than brown) would be great.”  This is what I came up with…

GIELLA custom blend cosmetics for brides

I created a stunning shimmery plum lipgloss that I named, "Magic Carpet Ride" and a plum mauve lipsticked named, "Mauvelous, Darling." Keep in mind that I can design the PERFECT lip combination for the day of your wedding!

I always find that the hardest thing to determine during a bridal trial is the lip color.  I don’t know why, one would think it would be the eye makeup or face makeup, but always the lip color.  I think this is because this is the last finishing touch of the final look that will make or break the makeup.

The beauty behind using GIELLA custom blend cosmetics is that I can really create ANY color and tweak it to perfection!  I also can color match anything that is discontinued and can no longer be found!

Be sure to book your makeup trial and learn more about the custom blended creations I can make JUST FOR YOU!  (I also can design eye liner pencils, lip pencils, loose eye shadows, foundations, bronzers, blushes, and nail polishes!)

Here is my lovely bride wearing the GIELLA lipstick and lipgloss I created for her!

For this bridal look, I created an overall natural look with a slight dewiness to the skin and soft eyes with a punch of plum shadow on the outer corners to coordinate with the mauve plum lips.

PS- If you have come across this blog and not from the NJ area, please do not hesitate to contact me directly regarding how to get a custom blended product made which I can ship to you directly.  If you have a discontinued cosmetic, these products (or a swatch of it) can be shipped to me at my makeup studio and I can create a match!

[What's Inside My Makeup Bag] – Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid (#3) + NARS “Albatross” = PERFECT Cheek Highlighting Combo

Posted in FACE, MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP BRUSHES, MELI'S MAKEUP BAG, POWDERS, SKINCARE with tags , on May 19, 2011 by stylebymeli
Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer (#3) and NARS "Albatross" highlighting powder

Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer (#3) and NARS "Albatross" highlighting powder - My everyday highlighting combo, they blend perfectly together!

I just blogged in my last post that I picked up the Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer in shade #3 from The Makeup Show on Monday and I have to say, it’s truly as amazing as I thought it would be!

The color is a beautiful light yellow gold with a slight shimmer (not overly shiny).  I think that being that the consistency is a sheer liquid, this would look great on pretty much all skin tones.  Stila also makes this product in a shade #1, which is more of a white pearl in the bottle.  This is very pretty too and would look best on very fair skin with a pink undertone.  (I feel with the gold, it compliments more people).

I have also blogged on multiple occasions regarding NARS “Albatross” which continues to be my highlighting powder of choice.  I absolutely love the way it looks on my skin.  Even though it appears white, when you look at it closely, it actually has traces of gold and once applied to the skin, leaves a highlight with a slight gold tone.  This would also flatter most people, more so people on the fair side though!  (Darker complexions would definitely benefit more from a highlighter with more of a beige bronze undertone in it).

Directions for how to Use the Stila liquid luminizer AND NARS powder highlighter:

-  After I have applied my skincare and liquid foundation, I then take the brush tip applicator from the Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer and dot along the top of my cheekbones and a little under the eye too (for a brightening effect).

-  I then use my fingertips and blend the liquid softly.  It leaves my skin with a slight glow and soft highlighting effect.  (A little goes a long way, I only need to use a very small amount)!

-  I set my entire face with a powder as I normally would.  As I recently mentioned, I am using Tarte’s Smooth Operator loose powder.

-  I personally use a MAC #165 brush (which unfortunately was a limited brush and I highly regret only owning one of these!  I only have one for my personal use) and apply the NARS “Albatross” along the same area, which again is the top of the cheekbones.  I usually only apply a REALLY small amount because there is already a liquid highlight in place.  However, sometimes I build it up by applying the NARS “Albatross” with a heavier hand, if I really want to enhance the cheekbones even more.  For everyday use, I like to keep it a little more subtle.

Styling Confession:  It wasn’t until recently that I became pretty obsessed with highlighting.  It was one of those things that I would do some days but not on an everyday basis.  Now I have gotten to a point where I LOVE highlighting because I have finally discovered products that really give me the look I want.

I believe a little highlighting to the cheekbones not only accentuates them (high cheekbones is always seen as an attractive facial characteristic), BUT I swear to you that it makes the face appear at least 5 years younger.  I feel it gives the skin that boost of youthfulness!  REALLY!  I think everyone can benefit from it!

[Why the need for two highlighting products?!?!]

Okay, I know it may seem a little excessive to be using two products for one job, which is to highlight the cheekbones.  However, you have to understand that I am using two COMPLETELY different mediums (a liquid and a powder).  I believe creating perfect skin is all about the way you layer your mediums to create depth and smoothness.  Kind of like a great outfit, it requires a layering process…from your accessories to your shoes to the pieces that create the final look of an outfit.  Makeup is NOT any different.

The liquid luminizer adds an initial GLOW to my skin itself and brightening effect, while the powder highlighter will actually build a little more DEPTH to the cheekbones by making them look more pronounced (visually bring them more forward).  Again, I want to emphasize that I’m only using a small amount of each product.  That’s why it still looks very natural on my skin.

*** Please Read (VERY IMPORTANT):  I find many people have a major misconception that the more makeup products a person uses, the more “cakey” and unnatural it starts to look.  It is NOT about HOW MANY products one uses that determines the naturalness of a look, it is the APPLICATION of the product (Example:  the brush a person uses to apply the product OR how much of the product a person chooses to use) that will determine how natural or unnatural a look is.

I hope you all enjoyed reading about my absolute favorite cheek highlighting combo and that this better clarifies the steps involved on how to use these products!  And more importantly, I hope I have further enlightened you all on what “highlighting” is all about, since I feel it is a subject matter most people are not completely familiar with!

[Do you highlight your cheekbones, if so, what are your favorite products to use?]
