Over the weekend, I was able to go to a Halloween party (a week early but this upcoming weekend will be very busy, so I wanted to be able to enjoy myself this past weekend) and had a great time putting together my “Like a Virgin” ensemble.

I LOVE MADONNA! She is seriously my idol.  Besides loving all her music, I love her drive and ambition towards everything she does in life.  This especially gave more meaningful to the costume and it was just a fun, iconic look for me to recreate!

The “Like a Virgin” costume must-haves: It is necessary to have white lace gloves, pearl jewelry, long cross necklace, a boy toy belt, a white lace bustier (I wore my white lace bodysuit), and while tulle bottom.

Despite the dressing up, my favorite thing to do was also capture the makeup with the 1980′s flare but in a modern, fresh way.

For starters, whenever you look at a photo of a makeup you like, it’s important to make sure that it’s close up enough that you can actually see the detail going on in the makeup.  Once you have the perfect photo, it’s time to really analyze the makeup.

Here is a checklist of all the visual details I look for in the makeup when I have a photo of a look to re-create:

FACE:

-  Does the skin look more matte (no shine) or have a glow to it?

-  What color is the blush?

-  What is the texture of the blush (shiny or matte)?

-  How strong is the contour (the dark color layered under cheekbone to make it more pronounced)?

-  Is there any highlighting done the face (such as cheek)?

-  Does the foundation look heavy or more transparent like the skin?

EYES:

-  What eyeshadow colors are used on the eyes?

-  Are the eyeshadows matte or shimmery (or a combination of both)?

-  What color is the eye liner?

-  Is there both bottom and top liner?

-  What is the thickness of the liner?

-  Really focus on the PLACEMENT of the shadows.  Although it can sometimes be hard to match it perfectly being that everyone has a different technique, it’s something to definitely keep in mind.  By placement, I mean does the placement of the shadow shape the eyes more almond shape or more rounded?

-  Are the eye shadows well blended or are the edges more sharp looking?

-  Are there false lashes?

-  Are the brows more dark or light?

-  How are the brows shaped (more arched, more rounded, etc.)?

-  Where do the brows start and end?

-  Are the brows more thick or thin?

LIPS:

- What color are the lips?

- Is the finish more glossy or matte?

- Do the lips look overly defined (look at the lip liner if there is evidence of lip liner)?

My Makeup Notes based on the Madonna photo below:

FACE: The face appears to be very matte with good foundation coverage (not too heavy or too sheer).  The blush looks a little peachy with a really strong contour cheeks.

EYES: The eyes are outlined with a heavy black eyeliner, very thickly while pointed up a little at the ends.  The shadows look fairly matte and the lid starts off almost flesh tone, but then the crease is heavily defined with a darker shadow.  It appears to be a pewter grey with blue tint.  It’s hard to tell if there are lashes or not but being that it is a photo shoot, I would have to assume yes.  The brows are  dark and think.  They have a more rounded arch and extend past the corners of both the inner/outer eye.

LIPS: The lips are a honey brown color with a slight glossiness to them.  They look extra defined with lipliner.

Here is what I did with my makeup!

 

I chose to do the heavy black liner around the entire eye, thicker brows that extended past my eyes a bit, peach cheek, light eye shadow with a blue/grey crease, heavy contour at the cheeks, and defined lips.  Also, the lips were definitely more brown in person than it was captured in the photo!

When creating any look from a photo, just keep a visual checklist of all the things you want to pay attention to for best replicating the look.  Remember, it’s okay to also change it a bit to best compliment your face in terms of the colors and placement of the makeup. For this look, I over emphasized my brows but also kept a higher arch (rather than rounded) because that is how I like my brows and it just looks better that way on me!
