Get “Haute & Naughty” Lashes with MAC’s New Cutting Edge Mascara

Posted in MAC MAKE-UP on June 27, 2010 by stylebymeli

Take a sneak peek at MAC’s new mascara coming out this fall!

Not only is the packaging super cool and not like any other mascara I’ve seen before, it comes with two wands (as shown here).

This mascara gives you the option of creating natural lashes with one wand OR dramatic lashes with more volume with the other wand.

What a great idea!  Normally, I’m not really that excited when a new mascara comes out because MAC seems to be coming out with so many new mascaras (at least within the past couple years) that it’s really hard at this point to determine which is the best.  I guess if I had to choose one, I’d choose Zoom Fast Black but I also like Opulash (it’s what I’m currently using at the moment) and Dazzle Lash is pretty good too.

Either way, I am actually very excited for this new MAC mascara!  It’s unique and I just can’t wait to try this out.

I’m going to share a couple mascara confessions…

Mascara Confession #1: I’m really not a mascara person mainly because I have baby lashes.  There’s really no mascara that’s going to make that much of an impact when there’s not a whole lot to enhance.  It’s one of the few things I can totally live without and sometimes I skip it completely.  (I also hate removing mascara at the end of the night, it’s just annoying!)

[* If you have little to no lashes (like myself), a good lash primer can make all the difference! I find the MAC Prep + Prime Lash to be the best.  You just coat the lashes first with the lash primer which is a white fiber formula that latches onto the lash to create extra length and volume.  Let it dry for a couple minutes and then put a coat of your favorite volumizing mascara.  Then va-va-vooom!  The lashes look longer and have more bulk, all thanks to the lash primer.].

Mascara Confession #2:  I actually never started wearing mascara on an everyday basis until midway through college!!!  I used to only save it for special occasions.  How funny is that?!?!

To me, a mascara is a mascara, they all pretty much do the same thing.  If I had it my way, I’d wear false lashes everyday!  Then again, I am just a makeup diva like that! ;)

MAC HAUTE & NAUGHTY LASH officially launches on September 16th, don’t miss out!

PS- MAC is actually trying to move up the launch date as soon as possible before other companies jump on this new lash technology bandwagon and try to recreate it.  Hence, I expect the mascara to come out much sooner.

PSS- Although all MAC mascaras currently cost $13, this will retail for $18.

Secrets to Flawless Skin: Meli’s Summer Skincare Prep Revealed

Posted in SKINCARE on June 25, 2010 by stylebymeli

Often times people ask me how do I keep my skin looking as good as it does and I usually respond, “I don’t wake up looking this good, trust me!”  However, I must say my skin is the most clear it’s ever been in YEARS.  It doesn’t just have to do with the make-up I use to create beautiful skin, but the products I use UNDER the makeup that do wonders for my skin.

When I tell people, I have more than 10 products on my face, I really do! Despite how natural it looks.  However, keep in mind that half of it is the skincare products I use.  Most people fail to prep their skin properly and this is what causes makeup to not last as long during the day and sometimes even lead to breakouts.

I find most people think that if they use just one or two items, this will give them their most natural look while using 10 items is going to “cake up” the skin but it is just the opposite! When you use only one or two products to do the job, often times you end up using so much of the product making the skin look unnatural.  This happens because it is really hard for one product to fulfill all the needs of your skin all at once.  Instead, it’s totally fine to use multiple products and layer them in such a way that will make the skin look as natural as it possibly can.

Starting from left to right, I am going to share every product I am currently using to prep my face before makeup application…

1) LAVANILA The Healthy Sunscreen SPF 40 Face Cream: This product is awesome!  It has SPF 40, is 100% natural, and has a nice creamy texture, what’s not to love about this product?  I use this as my moisturizer on really hot, sunny days to protect my face from sun damage.  I’m sure this is great to use year-round though.  I am a firm believer that EVERYONE needs to protect their face from the sun…I don’t care how old (or young I should say) you are or your skintone!  There needs to be a minimum of SPF 30 in at least one of your face products (in a moisturizer, primer, foundation, etc)! If there’s not, then invest in a good sunscreen and use this prior to makeup.

2) KORRES Quercetin & Oak Age-reversing Primer: I have already blogged in a previous post about this face primer.  I have tried almost every primer you can think of (Smashbox, MAC, Tarte, etc.) and this is definitely my favorite for obvious reasons.  It contains lots of natural ingredients and antioxidants than are good for the skin along with serving as my anti-aging product.

Serious Skin Care also has a really good primer that almost ties with Korres.  This primer is what I was initially using before I discovered this one.

* WHY IS PRIMER SO IMPORTANT? *

This is something I would like to discuss briefly although this is another subject I can probably write books about.  For starters, face primer is used AFTER moisturizer and BEFORE foundation.

It is used to hold the foundation longer throughout the day and smooth the skin of any pores or fine lines.  Primer will NOT erase these skin imperfections, but will definitely make a visible difference in terms of the smoothness and texture of the skin. Who doesn’t want smooth skin?

Yes, it is an extra step but totally worth it.  I NEVER skip face primer!  It is a necessity! Once you start using one, you will never find yourself skipping it again.  Trust me.

3) MAC Prep + Prime Line Filler:  This product seriously works magic.  I actually didn’t start incorporating this in my everyday skin routine until two weeks ago when I noticed my center forehead wrinkle was getting much more prominent.  And this is exactly where I apply this product, just in the deep wrinkle on my forehead.

It’s great because it really works!  It makes all lines look less visible and I’m sure over time, I’m going to start needing it in more areas of my face but for the time being, I just use an itty bitty drop of this where its needed most.

This also works great as an under eye primer allowing for concealer to blend more smoothly while also hiding any annoying under eye lines or “crow’s feet”.

Also, it’s amazingly cheap, it’s only $19.50!  I feel like a product like this could easily cost at least $30 and people would pay it but hey, I’m not complaining!  The tube is small but it does last awhile because only a small amount is needed for it to work its magic.  Another perk is that it is a treatment product, meaning over time, it really will make the lines appear less noticeable.

—————————————————————————————————————————

4) NEUTROGENA Skin Clearing Foundation:  Please note that this is a foundation, but I use this as my CONCEALER.  I honestly did buy this for the intentions of using this as a foundation but I really don’t like the consistency of it when used on the entire face.  The liquid is very sheer which is great but when used on the whole face, I feel it doesn’t look natural enough and totally gives away that I am wearing face makeup when I want it to look like my real skin.

Hence, I have been using this under my foundation as a concealer ONLY in areas of my face that are prone to breakouts.  I have to say, it really does the job right!  For the longest time, I had a small cluster of little pimples right by my chin area.  (I have heard that this is very common to have pimples in this area and that is usually stress related).

I just place a small amount of this product on top of this little spot and I swear that now, after using this over time on a consistent basis, I no longer have pimples there.  It’s completely smooth in this area and it’s thanks to the salicylic acid in the product that dries out the acne and prevents it have coming back.

I think it’s a cool concept that during the day, this product is battling my breakouts right under my makeup.  (At night, I try to use alternate my face products and include one with salicylic acid a couple nights a week so while I sleep, my skin is repairing and preventing any future breakouts from occurring).

—————————————————————————————————————————

5) STILA Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15:  Although I have used this all over the face as a daily moisturizer (in my opinion the coverage is way too minimal to even be listed as a tint by itself), I mainly use this just underneath my eyes and along the tops of my cheeks so it gives me a natural highlighting effect prior to my makeup application.  It’s really subtle which is what I like most about it.  It brightens underneath the eyes as well and gives my face just enough glow to the skin without looking like a shiny disco ball.

When I’m in a hurry, this is the one product I sometimes skip because I don’t think its an absolute necessity unlike the other products I just listed above; however, I do like what it does for my skin.

—————————————————————————————————————————

SUMMARY:  If you notice, I strategically have chosen a group of products that each have a purpose for my skin.  I don’t just use random skin products for the sake of using them.  Notice I have a good mix of skincare that protect my skin from the sun, provide antioxidants, hide lines, have anti-aging properties, and also give my skin the appearance of having a nice glow.  It took a few products to achieve this but the results are totally worth the time it takes for me to apply it.  For those of you wondering, it takes NO TIME to prep the skin.  I prep my skin within 2 minutes!

Everyone needs to create a daily skincare regime that suits the needs of your skin. While these products work AMAZING for me and have given me beautiful skin over time, keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different and may not lead to the same results.

I highly recommend these products to everyone but also do some research and see what’s out there. I’m always looking for the newest skincare products with the finest ingredients and love trying new things.  I have no problems changing up my skincare whenever I discover something new that I like or when the seasons change because skin tends to have different needs depending on weather.

Hope this was interesting and helpful, cheers to beautiful skin! :)

“HOT Contrasts”

Posted in STYLE COLLAGES on June 24, 2010 by stylebymeli

I worked on a new style collage today that captures a classic contrast of black and white with clothing and accessories.  Then the main statement is the shoes.  The majority of the shoes that I featured had a pop of color that then contrasts the black/white.  This is a fantastic styling concept and easy to create.  Just pair a black and white outfit and wear a pair of shoes that brighten up the look.

Heated Eyelash Curlers: Are they a DO or a DON’T?

Posted in MAKE-UP on June 22, 2010 by stylebymeli

I just recently purchased a heated eyelash curler as I’ve always wanted to see how these compare to regular eyelash curlers.  I also thought it would be a great addition to my make-up kit to use on those with lashes that just don’t seem to want to curl.

I ended up buying an eyelash curler by Ardell which is a company famously known for their fake eye lashes.  You can purchase these products from any supermarket or drugstore.

It is battery operated with two AAA batteries and heats up within minutes.   It is designed with a temperature sensitive silicone strip that turns clear once it is heated long enough and ready for usuage.  Once I started to clamp the curler onto my lashes, I felt the heat but not to the point that I could get burnt.  They aren’t meant to get too hot and are totally safe to use.  I found that my lashes definitely got an amazing lift from the heated eyelash curler versus a regular eyelash curler BUT it was more a straight up kind of effect instead of a more natural curl which can be more easily achieved when using a regular eyelash curler.  This could also be due to the fact that I have shorter lashes to begin with so there is not much to clamp onto to create a natural curling effect.

My verdict: Heated eyelash curlers are a DO

These are especially great for people that have lashes that grow straight out and refuse to curl.  I think it’s definitely something everyone should try at least once.  I plan on using this and retiring my current eyelash curlers.   (I own both the Shu Uemura and MAC ones).

Best of all, they are super affordable.  For less than $10, it’s a great investment.  These are even cheaper than regular eyelash curlers (Shu Uemura is known for offering the best eyelash curler and theirs retails for $19).  I just looked at Ebay and found there are hundreds of people selling heated eyelash curlers as low as $2.69 with FREE shipping.  You can’t beat that!

My Zappos Shopping Spree :) – Part I

Posted in ONLINE SHOPPING on June 16, 2010 by stylebymeli

Yesterday, I received my $1000 Zappos giftcard in the mail from Marie Claire magazine for the style contest I won.  I have never shopped at Zappos before but already know they have many great things!  Although they are best known for selling shoes, they now sell EVERYTHING!  Bags, shoes, jewelry…pretty much everything a girl could ever want!

It took me awhile to look around but I decided on ordering a few items and best of all, I got free overnight shipping AND received my order this morning, right before work!  It really felt like Christmas in June! :)

So let’s take a look at what I picked out so far….

(Be sure to click on Zappos images to see a full description of the items I purchased):

MARC BY MARC JACOBS Logo Mirror Travel Fast Bag

I am totally in LOVE with this bag!  I wasn’t 100% at first because I find most logo bags to be kind of tasteless and sometimes tacky.  However, this bag is ultra chic.  Why?  Because I said so ;)

Before I made my final decision to buy this bag, I went to Bloomingdales yesterday to see if they carried the bag and after describing it, she knew right away the bag I was talking about.  It was actually in a showcase because she only had 2 for sale.  The only problem was, she only had this bag in the Pewter (silver) color and I needed to see the gold.

I loved the style and overall shape of the bag.  I also love metallics because they go with everything and are always in style! Although the Pewter was nice, I am more of a gold person.  I took a chance by ordering the gold and it’s perfect!  It’s a light gold so it’s flashy but NOT overkill.

MISS SIXTY Avi Heels

I knew the moment I saw these that I needed them in my life.  No question about it.  I have been in search of a shoe that is a bone beige/cream color because I already own too much black and need a light shoe to go contrast my black outfits.

I have not seen anything quite like these and LOVE heels with a cuff.  They are hard to come by although they are definitely trending right now.  I am extremely picky when I shop for shoes, everything needs to be perfect in terms of the STYLING DETAILS.  I will sacrifice comfort for STYLE.  This shoe gets extra brownie points because they seem to be very comfortable and stylish, all at the same time!  I can’t wait to rock these!  They are perfect in every way!

DKNY JEANS Front S/L Romper

I have been looking for the perfect black romper and came across this one.  I like the silhouette and the zipper front detail.  The material is very lightweight and it’s very comfortable.  Unfortunately, the size I ordered is slightly too small.  I love it so much that I re-ordered a different size.  I’m hoping the fit will be better this time!

If not, I also saw a few other black rompers I was interested in.  It’s very hard to order clothing online when you can’t try it on.

Thankfully, Zappos has AMAZING customer service!  I am loving my Zappos shopping experience thus far and plan to be a loyal Zappos customer!
